"Hugo" and "The Artist" favorites for Oscars

With the Oscars less than a week away, speculations are running wild about this year's honors.

Favorite for top-prize of best picture is the silent black-and white film "The Artist" and Martin Scorsese's fantasy flick "Hugo".

Scott Mantz is film critic for U.S. entertainment program "Access Hollywood" and he predicts "the Artist" as the winner.

"It is so different, it is so wonderful on every level, that the other eight nominees in best picture don't have a chance. There is nothing like 'The Artist' this year, or any other year in decades."

"The Artist" is billed as a "love letter to Hollywood" by its director Michel Hazanavicius and tells the story of silent film star George Valentin and the rise of talking movies.

The film is nominated for ten Oscars, including best picture, best actor, best supporting actress and best director.

But the last accolade should go to Hugo-creator Scorsese, says Mantz.

"You're talking about a movie that will not only stand the test of time, but will gain its masterpiece status over the years in a way like 'Blade Runner' has. You're also talking about, it's his first 3-D movie, but the 3-D effect is so effective in 'Hugo' that you would swear that Scorsese had been making 3-D movies all along."

Nominated for 11 Oscars, "Hugo" is the story about an orphaned boy who comes in contact with George Melies, one of the pioneers of filmmaking.

Cinephiles have to wait until Sunday, February 26th though, to find out who the winners will be at the 84th Annual Academy Awards.
