NATO offers condolences over airstrike death

NATO-led forces in Afghanistan said that eight young Afghans were killed last week in an airstrike.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NATO COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR GENERAL LEWIS BOONE, SAYING:

"I would like to first express our most sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the eight victims of this small community."

Afghan President Hamid Karzai had ordered an investigation.

NATO admitted the deaths were the result of an airstrike.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NATO COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR GENERAL LEWIS BOONE, SAYING:

"In which eight young Afghans lost their lives as the result of an airstrike by coalition forces."

Afghan officials said the boys were bombed twice while herding sheep in heavy snow and lighting a fire to keep warm.

The U.N. said the number of civilians killed and wounded in the Afghan war has risen for the fifth year in a row.
