Adele swept the 2012 Grammys on Sunday night, taking home six awards including one for Album of the Year for her introspective 21.

The soulful songstress, whose full name is Adele Adkins, burst onto the British scene in 2008 with 19 and has since taken the world by storm. Her albums have topped the charts in more than two dozen countries. In America Adele is set to tie the record for consecutive weeks at No. 1, sharing the distinction with the recently deceased Whitney Houston, to whom much of Sunday's Grammy ceremony was dedicated.

Adele's path to recording greatness has been bumpy in recent months. She brushed off Karl Lagerfeld's "too fat" comment, one that the German fashion designer claims was taken out of context. And when she required surgery late last year to repair a vocal chord hemorrhage, fans became fearful her singing would be impacted. A flawless rendition of her hit single Rolling in the Deep on the Grammy stage put those fears to rest.

Adele is queen of the Grammys, but with her 1960s-inspired style, will she become the new Queen of Soul? We're still trying to reach Aretha Franklin (and Amy Winehouse) for comment.
