Etta James dies; "The Artist" scores

Legendary singer Etta James died Friday (January 20) morning due to complications from leukemia. She was 73. James was hospitalized in May for a blood infection and, according to her manager, was in the "final stages of leukemia." The prolific "At Last" singer won six Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
"The Artist" took home major prizes at the London Critics' Circle Awards for best film, best director and best actor. The French silent film also won three Golden Globes, was the most nominated for the BAFTA Awards, and is expected to nab major nominations at the Oscars when they are announced Tuesday. The movie centers around a pre-talkie silent film star wondering if the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into obscurity.
Nanni Moretti will head the jury at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival in May. The Italian actor and director won best director and best picture awards at Cannes in previous years. The festival runs from May 16-27.
Kate Beckinsale joined her castmates at the "Underworld Awakening" premiere Thursday. The fourth installment of the series was shot in 3D and is about the battle of humans against vampires and werewolves. The actress attributed yoga in preventing her from getting injured and keeping her in shape for the action packed movie.
