Police fire stun grenades and tear gas at Occupy Oakland protesters who throw rocks and hurl canisters back in an overnight confrontation on the downtown streets.
A fire lights up the scene where the anti-Wall Street demonstrators linger after a day when thousands rallying to protest economic inequality shut down the busy Port of Oakland but failed to bring the Northern California city to a halt.
Hundreds of police in riot gear advance in a line and start making arrests. They estimate 60 people have been arrested.
The authorities appear to be trying to force protesters from expanding their foothold around a public plaza.
