STORY: Township dwellers on Monday surveyed the damage caused by a tornado that tore through the Duduza township south east of Johannesburg a day earlier, causing the death of an eight-year-old child and injuring more than 160 people.
Hundreds were left homeless and spent the night at a local multi-purpose center.
The streets were littered with broken television screens, furniture and corrugated iron roofing from houses. Six people were also arrested while they were looting homes in the aftermath.
Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele has said Duduza will be declared a disaster area.
The opposition Democratic Alliance has demanded an investigation into poor construction of low cost houses.
The cost of the damage caused by the tornado still has to be assessed.
