Tips for Organizing Your Refrigerator - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Messy refrigerator can cause a problem. Maybe you buy something that you already had because you could not find it in the refrigerator. So here are some tips to keep an organized refrigerator. Always keep the same item in that same place. So, for example, we keep our eggs on the middle shelf on the left hand side. My husband knows it, I know it and they always go back in that place. Do not put your eggs on the door where they have the little egg crate. That is the warmest part of the refrigerator because as you open the door it gets warm air. So your eggs will go bad faster. So keep them inside. Meats and dairy should go in the bottom shelf. That is always the coldest place of your refrigerator. So you will get a little bit longer shelf life out of that. And if you are keeping your dairy all together, it kind of makes shopping making your shopping less a little bit easier. For your freezer, we came up with this idea of putting plastic boxes in the freezer. So we have a freezer with two shelves and there would just be a mass of things and searching for it. So we have a box on one shelf and a box on another, pull it out to find what we are looking for and then close the freezer. That way you are not letting all the cold air out of the freezer. Now why is that important? Well if you leave the freezer door open as you are searching and rummaging through the freezer, things will actually start to thaw and then you will get ice crystals and freezer burn. So you are kind of degrading the quality of the items that you have in the freezer. If you want to be really super organized, you could keep a list on your refrigerator door of everything that is in there especially the freezer. If you have a chest freezer it can sometimes become a black hole because you have to open it up and look inside. If you keep a list, you know that you have a 3 pound chuck roast in there. So you are not thinking 'maybe I have one', you know that you have one. And then you could write the date that you put it in there and that way you know how long it has been in there.
