It's not so long ago that the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was seen as the poorhouse of Germany. But the northeastern state has transformed itself: its financial consolidation is exemplary, people have stopped moving away, and tourism is flourishing with the state's combination of old Hanseatic cityscapes and pristine lakes.
