In Italy, Pope Benedict prepares for his journey to Madrid for World Youth Day. The pontiff addressed pilgrims in the courtyard of his summer residence near Rome.

Pope Benedict XVI asked the pilgrims gathered for the weekly General Audience on Wednesday to pray for his upcoming trip to Madrid, where he will begin a four-day Apostolic visit on Thursday

The pontiff initially addressed the crowd gathered in the courtyard of his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, just south-east of Rome, in Spanish.

[Pope Benedict XVI]:
"I warmly greet all the Spanish-speaking pilgrims who have come from Spain, Mexico and other Latin American countries. May this prayer accompany me and support me in the Apostolic trip to Spain I will begin tomorrow. Thanks to all of you, God bless you."

The main event of the trip will be the celebration of the World Youth Day, the yearly religious event initiated by the late John Paul II, which over the years has drawn hundreds of thousands of young people from all over the world.

[Pope Benedict XVI]:
"As you all know, tomorrow I will go to Madrid, where I will have the joy to meet many young people who gathered there for the 26th World Youth Day. I ask all of you to spiritually join with the prayer this important religious event."

Madrid is preparing a lavish welcome for Pope Benedict, but he will also face protests over its cost at a time of economic hardship.

Criticism has come from "Los Indignados" (Indignant Ones) protest movement, whose mostly young supporters occupied Madrid's central Puerta del Sol square in May to protest against government spending cuts, economic woes, and 21 percent unemployment.

Some Spanish priests have also questioned the costs, as well as what they see as unseemly corporate sponsorship.
