Rebel forces fighting outside Misrata attempt a westward push to the town of Zlitan. There are signs, say the rebels, that the Gaddafi regime is feeling the strain of NATO-backed air strikes.

Rebels on the front line west of Misrata said on Sunday they were feeling confident of making further advances towards the nearby town of Zlitan.

Facing a morning barrage of mortar fire and tank shelling, rebels said that morale was high and casualties on their side were relatively low.

[Ali Omar as-Shuafi, Local Rebel Fighter]:
"Two days ago, the revolutionaries have advanced three kilometers, thank God we haven't had any real casualties, most of them have been simple. We have concentrated ourselves here about a kilometer away from the (Libyan) army who are in this direction (gesturing with his hand). There is a battle nearly every hour, rockets and mortars are fired every hour," said a rebel fighter, Ali Omar al-Shuafi.

Local hospitals say they have treated around 25 fighters in the past 48 hours for light wounds.

NATO announced on Saturday that they hit four military storage faciliites and one tank in the Zlitan area.

Zlitan is the first major town west of rebel-held Misrata that lies on the coastal road to the capital Tripoli.
