Lumbar Spine Pathology Vertebral Wedge Compression Fracture medical-legal videos. Shows the causes and effects of a compression fracture.
The vertebrae are very strong, but they can be fractured just like any other bone. A compression fracture can occur when normal force is applied to a weakened vertebra, as in osteoporosis, infection or a cancer deposit, or if excessive force is applied to a normal vertebra, as in a high fall or jump or a motor vehicle accident.
BURST FRACTURE
If the compression force occurs vertically, it can cause a burst fracture. As the fractured vertebral body decreases in height, it expands in depth and width, and bone fragments are likely to irritate or damage adjacent structures such as the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots. This is a potentially debilitating injury due to spinal cord damage and paralysis.
