Contaminated River Water Kills Fish in Northern India

In northern India, a contaminated river with dead fish is a growing concern for Hindus... who travel to the river to pay homage to one of their deities. They say authorities did not properly clean the water with funds set aside by a high court.
Many Hindu devotees visiting the city of Mathura in India's Uttar Pradesh state have to cover their noses because there are thousands of dead fish stinking up the river.
A local priest says hundreds of thousands of fish have been dying in the river, spreading a foul smell in the vicinity of a nearby temple.
[Narendra Kumar Sharma, Local Priest]:
"Many fish have died in the river. Nobody is taking care of them. The place is stinking so much that the devotees have to cover their faces. The administration is not taking any action."
Several social activists and religious preachers have been demanding river drains be serviced. But Sharma believes district authorities have misused funds set aside to do just that.
[Hari Om Sharma, Social Activist]:
"The state government of Uttar Pradesh did not follow the directions given by the Allahabad High court. The Allahabad High Court had directed the state government to provide clean water to the devotees but the directions were not properly followed. The condition of water as you can see has not changed a bit. About 90 percent of the sanctioned five million dollars have been spent, but the condition of the water has not improved. Thousands of fish have died in the river and that is why the water is stinking."
There is no word when the situation may change.
