Nuclear Power in Lithuania | Global 3000

Just how difficult it is to decommission a nuclear power plant and opt instead for alternative energy sources is demonstrated by the example of the Ignalina plant. The facility closed down last year was once the biggest in the world. The Ignalina reactor was the same type as the reactors at Chernobyl. After pressure from the European Union the facility was turned off last year. But the decommissioning of the site will take two decades and cost around two point three billion euros. The problem of where to store the waste has still not been solved.
