A former foreign minister of Nepal collapsed and passed away while attempting to scale Mount Everest. His body has been brought back to Nepal and the cause of his death may be from acute altitude sickness.

The body of Nepal's former foreign minister was brought back to Kathmandu, Nepal on Wednesday morning.

The 82-year-old was attempting to become the oldest person to climb the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest.

He reached the first base camp in his record attempt on Monday on the lower slopes of the 29,000 feet peak before he collapsed.

[Parbat Gurung, Guide]:
"With the help of the sherpas, he was coming towards Base Camp, he had barely walked 328 feet down when he fell sick."

The former minier's climbing companions gave him water and oxygen, but were unable to resuscitate him.

It is believed the cause of death was related to acute altitude sickness, which is difficult to treat and is a common cause of death among mountain climbers.

In a press conference before leaving for the climb, he said he was determined to achieve his goal of conquering Mount Everest and wanted to break the record set by a Nepalese man at the age of 76 in 2008.

The former minister had been sticking to a strict fitness regime and had been training by scaling the 20,000 foot Island Peak and the 21,000 foot Mera Peak.

Mount Everest is Nepal's most popular peak and attracts hundreds of climbers every year. A total of 3,145 people have scaled it, and at least 227 people have died there.
