Top Indian Volleyball Player Recovering from Massive Injuries

One of India's leading women's volleyball players is recovering from injuries in New Delhi. She lost a leg and sustained multiple fractures when she was pushed from a moving train by robbers.
On Tuesday, medical specialists in New Delhi say the condition of India's national-level volleyball player Arunima Sinha is stable. She had her leg amputated after robbers pushed her out of a moving train in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.
23-year-old Sinha was moved to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh two days ago when the wound became infected.
[Dr. Vijay Sharma, All India Institute of Medical Sciences]:
"She is absolutely stable now. She had something to eat also an hour ago. She is absolutely fine and smiling."
Dr. Sharma says Sinha has other fractures in her spine.
Those fractures are stable and require only bed rest.
[Dr. Vijay Sharma, All India Institute of Medical Sciences]:
"Now coming on to major thing that is amputated lower extremity. We took her to operation theater and under anesthesia we opened the dressing and thoroughly 'debrided' that. She needs one or two 'debridement' before we totally close it."
The chief of the Trauma Centre of AIIMS says rehabilitation will be a challenge for Sinha.
[Dr. M. C. Misra, AIIMS Trauma Center]:
"Rehabilitation is going to be a challenging job in her case."
The Federal Sports Ministry will cover treatment costs as well as prescribed therapies and medicine.
