Locals of India's eastern Jharkhand state are suffering from a shortage of drinking water and decreasing groundwater levels. Many are leaving the village and selling off their livestock... simply because there's no food to feed them with.
Locals of the Chatra district in India's Jharkhand state are facing a severe shortage of drinking water and decreasing ground water levels.
Many living in the village have left their homes as a result.
[Jamna Kumar, Local]:
"The wells have dried; we don't even have drinking water. So that is why people are leaving the village. We have to walk for miles to fetch drinking water."
Some are forced to sell off their livestock due to lack of fodder for the animals.
Local authorities say many water pumps have been installed, but the sharp dip in water levels has caused them to not function.
Authorities say they'll take immediate measures to ensure the situation does not get worse.
India depends heavily on monsoon rains, as only 40 percent of its farmland has access to irrigation facilities.
