In the 18th century, the Duke of Lorraine hatched a plan to unite the new and old cities of Nancy, France.

Place Stanislas, a sprawling urban space featuring magnificent monuments, was designed and completed by 1756.

The square features an Arc de Triomphe, among other edifices, to honor the duke's son-in-law Louis the fifteenth.

A statue of the duke was eventually placed in the square, giving the area the name it has today.

It is surrounded on all sides by a harmonious collection of important buildings and wrought iron gates plated with gold.

Right down to the lamp posts, much of the square is classical in style.

Place Stanislas was unequaled in its design and execution when it was built, and in many ways it still is today.
