The Sri Lankan Navy opened fire at a group of three seafaring Indian fishermen in the Indian Ocean on Thursday. The fishermen were suspected of trespassing into Indian waters.

On Thursday, the Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opened fire at Indian fishermen in the Indian Ocean, killing one and critically injuring another.

It happened after naval personnel suspected the Indian fishermen were venturing into Sri Lankan waters, but there's been no confirmation as to which country's waters the fishermen were in.

[Rajendran, Indian Fisherman]:
"At one in the afternoon, the Sri Lankan Navy fired on us. We immediately returned to shore. We must condemn the Sri Lankan Naval force, which has been doing this repeatedly. We hope it will not be repeated again and the government must take action after this incident."

The chief minister of India's state of Tamil Nadu has reportedly requested that New Delhi take up this issue with their Sri Lankan counterparts.

Tamil Nadu's government has also announced it will be giving about $11,000 of compensation to the dead fisherman's family.
