Australian floods 'could see more evacuated'

Officials in Australia fear the current flood crisis, the worst in living memory, could see further evacuations.

Hundreds of properties have already been vacated and thousands moved to makeshift centres across the state of Queensland.

Floodwaters have inundated 120 homes in the southeast Queensland town of Bundaberg and 400 people were moved to safety overnight.

Police had to rescue two people from the roof of their flooded home in one of the worst hit areas near the Burnett River where water levels peaked at over 7.9 metres (25.9 feet).

The premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh, said more communities were at risk: "We've still got a number of communities that are facing the prospect of increased flooding over the next couple of the days. So, this disaster that's unfolding on an unprecedented scale is far from over."

Water levels in several more rivers are expected to peak but the weather system which dumped record rain over parts of Queensland is now making its way towards the sea, the weather bureau has said.
