Fourteen primary school children lost their lives in a bus accident in central China Monday. Authorities are investigating the accident but they believe the cause to be bad weather and reckless driving.

A three-wheeled vehicle ferrying primary school children plunged into a creek in foggy conditions in central China on Monday. Fourteen children were killed.

According to Chinese state media, the accident happened at around 8 in the morning in a village close to Hengyang City in Hunan Province.

While the accident is still under investigation, authorities believe it was caused by heavy fog, fast and reckless driving, and the use of a prohibited vehicle to shuttle students to school.

Nine children died on the scene and another four died later in hospital. One child who was initially reported as missing was later found dead.

Six injured students were being treated at the local hospital, and are in stable condition.
