Rescue workers clear rubble in central Serbia after an earthquake killed two people and injured at least 50. The tremor of magnitude 5.4 left the region in a state of emergency.

Rescue workers began clearing rubble of a house in Kraljevo City, about 94 miles (150 km.) southwest of the capital Belgrade, soon after a moderate earthquake caused its roof to collapse.

The rescue team tried to save two members of the Stasic family, Sinisa and Natalija, but found both family members dead.

A duty officer at the local medical centre in Kraljevo, a city of about 70,000, says at least 50 people were injured in the quake, many of them with minor cuts and bruises.

The local hospital and the library were also damaged.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center says the tremor registered a magnitude of 5.4, with an epicenter 2 kilometers north of the city of Kraljevo.

Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic travelled to the region, declaring a state of emergency in the Kraljevo municipality.
