The Commonwealth Games is now underway in New Delhi, India. After weeks of setbacks, a colorful opening ceremony marked the start of the two-week event.

Fireworks lit up the sky above New Delhi on Sunday night, as the Commonwealth Games got underway with a spectacular opening ceremony.

Inside the stadium, thousands took part in a collage showing India's diversity and rich culture.

Many members of the audience were impressed with what they saw.

[Sampada, Local]:
"It was creative and innovative. Initially, there was some doubt as to how the games will be organized, but after seeing the opening ceremony it seems the games will go well."

Security personnel were on high alert during the day, with police deployed near the stadium and around the city.

The build up to the beginning of the Games was tarnished by a series of setbacks, including the shooting of two tourists blamed on militants, the collapse of a bridge near the stadium, and complaints about the cleanliness of the athletes' village.

Some athletes chose to withdraw from the Games, citing security and health concerns.

Organizers are hoping to shake off the events of the last few weeks, as the sporting competition takes place over the next 11 days.
