Athletes Arrive in New Delhi

The Scotland team for the Commonwealth Games arrived in New Delhi on Sunday -- hours after the Australian and Kenyan contingents made their entrance.

The Commonwealth Games Federation President has said that there will be full participation by all countries in the games -- a relief for many, following health, safety, and hygiene concerns.

Just last week a pedestrian footbridge collapsed, injuring 37 workers.

And complaints of unsanitary living quarters and even a recent outbreak of Dengue fever have left many worried.

But the athletes' arrival stands to eclipse the controversies and apprehensions that have plagued preparations.

Meanwhile on Sunday, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the Sports Injury Recovery Center.

The seven-story center has a patient capacity of 35 beds, and includes state-of-the-art operation theatres -- the facility may help allay athletes' concerns over India's preparedness.

But the Indian government and event organizers are now in a race against time to ensure preparations for the games are complete ahead of the opening showpiece event set for October 3rd.

Around 10,000 athletes from 71 teams representing 54 Commonwealth member states are expected to attend the mega-event.

The 12-day extravaganza will be India's biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.
