Floods Cripple Normal Life in Parts of Northern India

Heavy downpours and incessant rains across northern India over the past few days have put residents at risk and disrupted their lives.
In New Delhi, the water level of the Yamuna River has started to cross the danger mark. People residing in low-lying areas were trapped as the river breached its banks, flooding fields and shanties nearby.

"We are hoping that in a few days the level will drop further."
Sources say water released from a dam could reach the capital by Saturday, raising the levels further.
New Delhi has recorded over two feet of rainfall during this monsoon season so far, much higher than previous years.
Meanwhile in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the flood situation remains grim.

"The Ghaghra and Rapti Rivers have caused floods in many villages. Eighty villages have been affected, out of which 15 are completely submerged. We have deployed 70 boats for rescue operations."
Locals are still waiting for help from the government.

"Everything is submerged in water and surrounded by water. There have been floods for the last four to five years and there has been no help from the government."
The Ghaghra River has crossed the danger mark, and nearby villages have been inundated with water.
This year’s monsoon rains have caused extensive floods in several parts of northern India like Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh in the north, causing devastation to life and property.
