England knocked out of the World Cup

England have been knocked out of the 2010 World Cup in the second round, after a rampant Germany side ran out 4-1 victors in Bloemfontein.

The Germans went two-nil in front through Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski, before Matthew Upson headed home his second international goal to bring England back into the match.

The talking point of the game saw England being denied an equalising goal just minutes after, when a Frank Lampard shot from 20 metres hit the crossbar before bouncing down over the line.

Neither the referee or his assistants awarded the goal, leaving England players and management protesting about the decision, as television replay's clearly showed it was a goal

Both sides had their chances in the second half, before Thomas Mueller scored two goals in three minutes midway through the half to put the tie out of England's reach.

Captain Steven Gerrard created England's best chance with ten minutes to go, but his shot was well saved, as Germany will now go on to face the winners of this evening's game between Argentina and Mexico in the quarter-finals.
