Locusts Threaten Crops in Australia

In Australia, locust swarms continue to sweep across crop fields in New South Wales and Victoria. Government officials warn a locust plague could threaten Australia's wheat crop ahead of the October harvest.

Adult locusts are headed south from the tropical state of Queensland, to more southern grain-growing regions after high precipitation in recent months.

They are endangering crops in the world's fourth largest wheat exporter. Tens of millions of dollars in damage could be done to crops.

The last significant locust plague in Australia was in 2004, but farmers managed to combat it by destroying hatchlings.
