Donovan 'devastated' for David Beckham

LA Galaxy captain Landon Donovan says he and his team-mates are upset by news of David Beckham's injury.

Donovan, who just completed a ten-week loan at Everton, returned to the United States on Sunday as news of Beckham's injury was surfacing.

"First and foremost, we are devastated for David," explained Donovan, who in the past has had issues with Beckham's commitment to the Galaxy.

"Those of us in the locker room know how much it meant to him to give himself a chance to play in the World Cup. Now that is gone."

Beckham underwent surgery in Finland on Monday to repair his torn left Achilles tendon. No timetable has been set for the 34-year-old's rehabilitation process or his return to the field.

On the positive side for Donovan, his spell abroad was an absolute success. The 28-year-old appeared in 13 games for Everton, including ten league matches, as well as two Europa League games and one FA Cup match, scoring two goals and claiming three assists.

"For a soccer player, playing in the Premier league, it is always going to be special. So, having that opportunity playing against the best teams in the world, that experience is very valuable, not only as an athlete but as a person and I took advantage of it."

Donovan is about to enter his sixth season in Los Angeles and is seven goals shy of becoming the Galaxy's all-time leading scorer. He is also coming off a season in which he had a team-high 12 goals and helped lead the club to last November's MLS Cup final, where they lost to Real Salt Lake on penalties.
