Regards sur la banlieue: Bagatelle I (part 1)

  • il y a 14 ans
Half of one piece in a triptych on the housing projects (or cités) in and around Toulouse, France. These groupings of large housing blocks were constructed in the decades following WWII on the communist model: egalitarian, communal constructions that allowed the government to raze the slums that sprung up after the war. These short documentaries focus on the perspective of the inhabitants in neighborhoods that are plagued by unemployment, wealth disparities compared with other parts of the city, and - according to the government - increasing crime and insecurity due to the large population of foreigners. Bagatelle (nicknamed "Baghdad") is made up of 57% public housing, has 36% unemployment, and a population of 19% foreign and 36% low income. Subject: Immigration and undocumented immigrants in Bagatelle.
