France: Portrait of Jacques Delors | European Journal

Jaques Delors was one of the significant architects of the new united Europe. As president of the European Commission at the time,he was a major supporter of German reunification following the fall of the Berlin Wall. When it came to the EU's enlargement into Eastern Europe,Delors warned that it would be burdensome, that the bloc needed to get its house in order before it could expand. At that time,he met with little sympathy. With the Lisbon Treaty there was finally a framework for securing the future of the EU. But Delors is once again uneasy: the European Council presidency supports primarily the interests of the individual states,he believes. It would be better to strengthen the European Commission and with it the bloc’s common interests.
