The crash happened near a railway station in Etawah in India's Uttar Pradesh state.
The driver of one of the trains trapped in his cab.
A separate incident in the same state involved two express trains.
One ploughed into the back of the other, which was standing near Panki railway station in Kanpur City at the time.
Two of the stationary coaches were completely destroyed.
Dozens of passengers were trapped in the mangled wreckage.
The death toll is expected to rise.
Officials say the dense fog blanketing northern India is the most likely cause.
Flights from the capital New Delhi were cancelled.
And on the roads drivers faced severe problems.
