Quite a festival in India's desert state of Rajasthan. An annual camel festival is underway.

In India’s Rajasthan state, a three-day long annual International Camel Festival is underway. Both foreign and domestic tourists are delighted to experience the colorful cultural heritage of the state.

Among the highlights of the festival was a “Camel Beauty Contest.” Colorfully decorated camels took part and displayed graceful gaits and traits.

Various designs were painted on the bodies of the camels making them quite attractive.

[Jean, French Tourist and Photographer]:
“The festival captures the spirit and essence of Rajasthan. So as a photographer (for me), it is terrific but the scale is nice, not too big, it is a nice, pleasant-sized, relaxed festival. So every year I come and I think that I have done all the work I had to do but I find that I have even more things to photograph, so it is a pleasure to come back.”

Tourists were upbeat about the traditional reception and were amazed by the ethnic ornaments and costumes adorned by Rajasthani women.

[Amy, French Tourist]:
"It is nice to see a lot of colors on the camels, the costumes are very beautiful and it’s very impressive for us French people to see.”

Organizers say each year, the festival has seen an increase in number of camels as well as tourists.

[Shreya Guha, District Collector, Bikaner]: (female, Hindi)
“This time we have tried to bring in a lot of novelty, we have tried to reach out to the urban gentry. The exhibition that one is witnessing this time has been introduced this year. We have also tried to catch children's imagination for which we have conducted the candle relay event.”

Local artists performed traditional dances to the tunes of folk music.

Another attraction at the fair was an exclusive event in which trained camels performed synchronized dance steps.
