In the summer of 1989 the first hole appeared in the iron curtain as thousands of East Germans crossed into Hungary. Pretending to be tourists,their actual intent was to cross over into the west. The Hungarian government had already started tearing down the border facilities,but were still patrolling the border heavily. East German citizens Anett and Rolf Kaiser were among those who tried to escape across the Hungarian border. After two failed attempts,the third one succeeded in dramatic style.
