00:00There is no basis for their sovereignty.
00:03That is what China is aiming at in the new maritime law of the Philippines
00:06where the formal mention of the West Philippine Sea is also mentioned.
00:11But according to a geopolitical analyst,
00:13according to our maritime zones law,
00:15in the international law,
00:16JP Soriano is right.
00:22The new laws that govern the maritime zones
00:26and archipelagic sea lanes of the Philippines
00:28are important to China.
00:30According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry,
00:32Beijing called our ambassador,
00:35Jaime Flor Cruz,
00:36to arrive at their maritime condemnation.
00:40China is aiming at no basis for any law of the Philippines
00:44that is based on the 2016 Arbitral Award
00:47that the Philippines got.
00:49They are claiming their sovereignty,
00:52rights, and interests in the South China Sea
00:55that is based on the history and law
00:59that they abide by in the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea
01:03and is not affected by our Maritime Zones Act.
01:07Ambassador Flor Cruz and our Department of Foreign Affairs
01:11are not yet subject to Beijing's summons.
01:14Unlike China, America supports the Maritime Zones Act.
01:18But according to the geopolitical analyst, Don McLean Gill,
01:22China is wrong
01:25that our Maritime Zones Act is not in accordance with international law.
01:29This was drawn from international law.
01:32So I think that that is again another disinformation that is being spread.
01:36And we have to be very careful about the information that we uphold
01:40regarding these sort of activities.
01:42Archipelagic sea lanes are established
01:45as the three official sea lanes in the country
01:48where ships and airplanes of other countries,
01:52civilian or military,
01:54are not included in the 10-line claim of China.
02:00According to Professor J. Batong-Bacal,
02:03this law is directly applicable to sea vehicles of any country
02:08that can only pass through the Philippine waters
02:10from China or allied countries.
02:15When it comes to military vessels and aircraft,
02:19at least we can confine them to the archipelagic sea lanes
02:25that we will designate.
02:27It's not just where they want to pass through.
02:30For GMA Integrated News,
02:32J.P. Soriano,
02:33for 24 Hours.
