00:00Sometimes, the solution to pollution can be found in the discovery of a plastic-eating bacteria.
00:17But what if a type of bacteria is used to make plastic so that it can rot?
00:23Let's change the game!
00:30Almost everything in the world is made of plastic.
00:34Every year, 9.5 billion tons of plastic is produced worldwide.
00:41But the problem is, the plastic we make is petroleum-based,
00:45or the one that is formed when fossil fuels are burned,
00:51so it also has an impact on climate change.
00:54What if we can make eco-friendly plastic that is not made from fossil fuels,
01:00and it's easy to biodegrade?
01:02Is that possible with the help of bacteria?
01:06Let's go!
01:09That's BHA, short for polyhydroxyalkanoates,
01:14a type of biodegradable plastic that is formed when bacteria are fermented.
01:21The best part?
01:22BHA bioplastics can decompose in just a month!
01:27Developed by the Biomaterials and Environmental Engineering Laboratory of UP Los Banos,
01:32headed by Dr. JRS Ventura.
01:35BHA is an innate property of bacteria.
01:40It's the only type of plastic that can be degraded in any kind of environment.
01:45Its properties are almost the same as our traditional plastics.
01:49From bacteria to plastic?
01:51Sounds promising!
01:53That's why its research and development received funding from DOST since 2017.
01:59We collect from waste, from sediment samples, from bodies of water.
02:05We have more than 300 species or strains of BHA-producing bacteria.
02:09The process of obtaining and multiplying BHA-producing bacteria begins.
02:14Under the microscope,
02:16we will see an indicator that the bacteria has BHA.
02:20It should be purple.
02:22We have multiplied the extracted bacteria.
02:26Now, we will put it in the fermentation media
02:32to multiply the BHA content.
02:38After a day, it will undergo extraction and purification.
02:44The BHA will be used as raw material in various bioplastic products,
02:50from plastic bags to containers.
02:56Now, DOST gave us an opportunity to continue to scale it up.
03:01Even if we can't change our needs for plastic,
03:05there are many ways to make it sustainable.
03:10For GMA Integrated News, I'm Martin Avier,
03:13Changing the Game!
03:16Studying just got a little more interesting
03:19because of our innovation today that uses mixed reality
03:23to transport students to their studies.
03:27Let's change the game!
03:35VR or Virtual Reality is one of the recent innovations in the world of gaming.
03:41But did you know that it's not just used for entertainment?
03:46Virtual Reality can be used to simulate a chemistry lab,
03:53to transport and see the composition of an animal cell,
03:57and to operate machinery.
04:00That's right, because of our innovation today,
04:03we will use mixed reality to help students in their studies.
04:08Introducing Parallax,
04:10an educational tech simulation app that can give students a hands-on experience
04:16with the use of mixed reality.
04:19Developed by Engineer Albertson Amante and his team at Batanga State University.
04:24There is a gap on the access to laboratories.
04:27The access to these laboratories can be very expensive,
04:30and sometimes it can be very dangerous to perform such experimentations.
04:36So what we've come up with is something that is virtual.
04:41Engineer Albert entered the world of mixed reality
04:44by making Mr. Tour Guide under DOST.
04:48Here, the heritage sites of Batanga City can be visited virtually.
04:53And in 2023, with the help of the grant of DOST TAPI,
04:57they started Parallax.
04:59We have developers, graphic artists,
05:03experts into virtual reality and 3D design.
05:07We also have some resource persons,
05:09because we're talking about subject matter experts.
05:14So now, we will try Parallax.
05:17And the first simulation we will try is the animal cell.
05:21Let's go inside.
05:23Parallax explains the part that we pressed.
05:28Nucleolus, cell membrane, mitochondria.
05:31We will explore the chemistry.
05:35And we're inside the lab.
05:37We will arrange the equipment here.
05:41And it can also be used to familiarize heavy equipment for engineering students.
05:47Visual representations are better.
05:49This gives them the right amount of preparation
05:53before they actually use the equipment.
05:57There you have it, Kapuso.
05:58A game-changing innovation that can level up the learning experience of our students.
06:04For GMA Integrated News, I'm Martin Javier.
