00:00A wonderful Tuesday afternoon to all of you.
00:09Yours truly, Denise Osorio here for PTV News Now.
00:12Kicking off our stories for this afternoon, we take a look at the country's public schools
00:17whose infrastructure, learning materials, and instruments sustained damage from Tropical
00:22Storm Christine's passage are to receive first dibs in DAPED's rehab, repair, or reconstruction
00:28list.
00:29In a statement released earlier today, Department of Education Chief Sonny Angara said the ASAP
00:35order is to allow quick resumption or restoration of normalcy to these schools, given the extended
00:41disruptions in learning endured by the students and the teachers who play catch-up on their
00:46lesson plans.
00:47In particular, the DAPED seeks to replace irreparably damaged textbooks, learning materials,
00:52tools and computer systems, and then set up temporary learning spaces or facilities and
00:57utilize additional maintenance and operating expenses if need be.
01:02Damage in schools hit by Tropical Storm Christine is pegged at approximately P3.7 billion, of
01:08which P2.9 billion is for reconstruction and P737.5 million for major repairs and rehab.
01:19It began last week in Phoenix, Arizona, and then a spate of copycat acts followed, the
01:25more recent of which was in the Pacific Northwest in Vancouver, Washington State.
01:31Mailboxes and or ballot collection boxes for early mail-in voting set aflame by agents
01:36of chaos and anarchy who wish to totally disrupt the November 5 presidential polls for good.
01:43Another mailbox in Portland, Oregon, was also set ablaze by way of an incendiary device
01:51a half an hour apart from the Vancouver, Washington incident.
01:55But a fire suppressant system inside the collection box spared all but three filled
01:59out ballots inside.
02:01The series of attacks on mailboxes comes as Homeland Security officials warn of election-related
02:06violence from domestic violent extremists or DVEs, potential targets, the DHS and the
02:13FBI say, could include campaign events, vote counting sites, ballot drop box locations,
02:20voter registration sites, political party offices or headquarters, and polling places.
02:28Forty million of the baby boomers who voted in the 2016 polls between Hillary Clinton
02:33and Donald Trump are dead.
02:35Eight years later, at least 20 to 25 million millennial or Gen Z voters by conservative
02:41estimates are participating in their first democratic exercise next week, and they are
02:46helping out, get out the vote, as VOA's Laurel Bowman tells us in this report.
02:51Thank you, our first mock voter, yay!
02:57Student leaders at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland, recently set up a mock polling booth
03:03with sample ballots and invited election officials to conduct voter education.
03:08It's an effort to get students ready to vote in the November U.S. presidential election.
03:14Today's event was all about voter education and letting people see the polls, see what
03:20they were going to experience at the polls.
03:23Participants like Akyan Demang seem appreciative.
03:26I just want to see how it feels like voting for the first time, because this is my first
03:31time voting for the actual presidential election, and I want to see what is the procedure.
03:36These young voters care about a range of issues.
03:40Financial issues with the debt of the country.
03:43I don't really understand much of it, but if I look at it, it looks like a big number.
03:47I don't understand why it's that high.
03:49So I would say climate change is important, reproductive rights.
03:54I think for many people, America's role in the world is a very important issue, particularly
04:00for young voters.
04:01In the U.S. presidential race between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris, most
04:07of the students we interviewed would not reveal who they'll be voting for.
04:11But the U.S. state of Maryland, a stronghold for Democrats, is expected to go for Harris.
04:17So we asked the head of the Georgia Young Republicans, Jacqueline Harn, what issues
04:21matter to her Republican peers.
04:24For many, she said, it's about the economy.
04:28Between housing, between inflation with grocery prices and gas prices ever increasing, it's
04:34unaffordable to live and have a family right now.
04:36And how should campaigns go about reaching young voters?
04:39You're not going to reach a Gen Z voter by doing a phone bank and phone calling them
04:43because they probably have a spam blocker on their phone or they're just not going to
04:47answer a number they don't know.
04:49Because we are, we're the social media generation.
04:51Everything that we looked at was on social media.
04:53We did our news from social media.
04:55Democratic social media influencer Harry Sisson agrees.
04:58And I'd say primarily, maybe the main news app for young people is probably TikTok.
05:05Probably TikTok.
05:06And, you know, whatever reason that may be, I think it's mostly because it's digestible.
05:11A lot of these news segments that you see on TikTok are 30 to 60 seconds.
05:16Meantime, in Herndon, Virginia, Kamala Harris supporter Camila Alfonso Mesa goes house to
05:22house trying to encourage people to vote for her candidate.
05:27They don't always open the door, but she keeps at it.
05:29Hi. Definitely our supporters.
05:32She says that Harris replacing President Joe Biden in the presidential race was invigorating
05:38for young Democrats.
05:40I have seen a big shift in energy and enthusiasm since the vice president became the
05:47nominee. Alfonso Mesa thanks the Gen Z voting bloc of over 40 million young people could
05:54make a real difference in the presidential election.
05:58Laurel Bowman, VOA News.
06:02And we've come to the show's end for this afternoon.
06:08Join us on you later tonight for the back end of this twin bill news break report.
06:12So you all stay connected by keeping it here for news you can count on.
06:16I'm Denise Osorio and thank you for watching PTV News Now.
