00:00What did you think of Purdy's performance yesterday?
00:02I thought he was very good and, you know, we had a little show thread earlier and Lucas
00:07director of sports said something as I was in my re-watch.
00:10I was actually in the first quarter of the re-watch and he thought that Brock was really
00:13bad in the first half and then really good.
00:17I thought watching the game again, he was very good in the first half.
00:20He made ostensibly two mistakes, fourth down throw behind Debo, bad throw, Debo was wide
00:27open on fourth down, that moves the chains and then the Tom Brady tuck play where he
00:34tried to pump and hold and it just slid out of his hand and that was a fumble, but they
00:38got the ball back.
00:39Other than that, I thought he was damn near flawless in the first half.
00:42Did they call that a fumble?
00:43Yes.
00:44That's a fumble.
00:45No, that's a fumble.
00:46That was a fumble.
00:47His arm is coming forward.
00:48No, but when you're trying to collect the ball, when you're clearly not throwing it,
00:51it's the empty hand rule.
00:53So when you go forward, even though you're going forward, it's not a pass anymore.
00:58They changed that rule.
00:59I could have sworn that they made it second and 10 right after that and it was behind
01:04the line of scrimmage when it was recovered.
01:05I know the Niners recovered it.
01:07I could have sworn they did not.
01:09They did not.
01:10Let me go to the notes.
01:11Yeah, let's, let's, let's uh.
01:12It was a fumble.
01:13Yeah, they have the referee who came on right away and he said, yeah, it's the empty hand
01:16where it's clear that the intent was not to throw it and then the ball comes out and that's
01:21a fumble.
01:22You have to move the ball back to the spot of the fumble because you can't advance a
01:25fumbled ball.
01:26The offense.
01:27Interesting.
01:28Cause I thought it was still like second and 10 right after that.
01:30But uh, but okay.
01:31All right.
01:32Yeah.
01:33And that's like, I don't even know if that's, that's just kinda, that's one of those things.
01:37Do you know what I mean?
01:38Right.
01:39Like if you see something and then you're like, nope, I want to pull that thing back
01:41and it squirts out.
01:42I'm not going to come down someone's road for that.
01:44I think he missed more throws than you're sort of mentioning in that first half.
01:49I thought he was wobbly.
01:51I didn't necessarily know all the time whether that was, you know, I don't know, is the receiver
01:56in the right spot?
01:57Not whatnot.
01:58I did not think Brock was as bad as a lot of people were saying, but I didn't think
02:02he was very good either.
02:03It was sort of a, a run of the mill situation.
02:07I was more put off by the holding penalties that kept coming, that kept taking things
02:12off the board that I thought really changed the whole 49 or offense.
02:15Not just pretty, but in the second half he was fantastic.
02:18I'm just looking at the first half and you know, the fourth and three he threw behind
02:21Debo and on that drive third and seven, they blitz him and he beats it.
02:27He sees it, he beats it and he goes to pierce all for 14, which moved the chains.
02:31And that's a play that I definitely highlighted Debo with the drop on first and 20 after Kittle
02:36held they had a screen pass and that play would have gone for maybe 15, 20 or more.
02:42And that's one that, that hurts Brock and his ledger because that would have been a
02:45big play.
02:46The fumble when he had that, it made it third and 17.
02:50It was second and 10.
02:51He fumbles it and Grandy's right.
02:53They move it back to the spot.
02:55And then third and 17, they ended up having to punt after he threw incomplete to Conley.
02:59Got it.
03:00Okay.
03:01Eight at eight, nine, five, seven, nine, five, seven in the number Austin and San Jose.
03:04Next up.
03:05Hey Austin, what's good?
03:06Austin, you there?
03:07Three, two, one.
03:08Austin.
03:09Go on.
03:10A Rich.
03:11Get out of here.
03:12I got flushed.
03:13All right, Rich, you're next.
03:14What's up fella?
03:15Thank you for taking my call.
03:16Yeah, man.
03:17So I believe George brought the whole Kittle and Caboodle yesterday.
03:18Just the phenomenal performance.
03:19There was no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
03:20No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
03:21no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
03:22Yeah.
03:23Yeah.
03:24So then after they got out of here, they took a little break.
03:25Mitch, you're next.
03:28What's up, fellas?
03:29Thanks for taking my call.
03:30Yeah, man.
03:32So, I believe George brought the whole
03:35kittle and caboodle yesterday.
03:38Just a phenomenal job by him.
03:40And I think you're right.
03:41I think he is the best all-around
03:43tight end in the league,
03:44when you look at everything that a tight end does.
03:47But, you know, the thing is, is fans are,
03:49you know, really hard on the 49ers right now,
03:53particularly the defense.
03:55Got a little scared in the fourth quarter,
03:57and I know, I get it.
03:58People are saying, you know what,
04:00this happened so many times this year,
04:02where, you know, we get a lead,
04:04we can't hang on to it,
04:05the fourth quarter comes and we fall apart.
04:07Okay, and in this sense, we did not.
04:10We hung on.
04:11But I think the message I need to get to the fan base
04:14is this, is that, guys,
04:16the defense does not have all of its starters out there.
04:19Okay, you saw that.
04:20Remember the play with CeeDee Lamb,
04:22where he's wide open?
04:23You got guys running into each other.
04:25If that isn't rookie, what is?
04:27I mean, come on.
04:28That's just, that's just a rookie mistake.
04:30The only worry there, Rich, though,
04:33is that those guys are starters now.
04:35I mean, that was Jair Brown and Renardo Green,
04:37and I get that Green is just getting mixed in
04:39and he is a rook.
04:41But, you know, these guys play.
04:44They play every game.
04:45And so, you're not wrong,
04:47but they can't do that anymore.
04:49Not if you're gonna play NFL football.
04:52Okay, but to your point, you said they're starters now,
04:55but how long have they been starters
04:57and how long have they been playing together?
04:58Not long.
04:59Yep.
05:00So, we know in NFL, Mark Willard,
05:04you have to gel.
05:06You gotta play together.
05:07You have to have consistency.
05:08That's why consistency and continuity
05:10is so important in NFL.
05:11If you haven't played together a long time,
05:14that's gonna present itself.
05:15And that's what happened in that game last night.
05:17You saw that.
05:19But my point being is this,
05:20they managed to get the win when they needed to.
05:23And to your point, they got 13 days.
05:26And a lot of people are talking about Washington
05:29and Detroit and all these other teams.
05:30They're saying, hey, guess what?
05:31A lot can happen in 13 days.
05:34Okay, hey, the teams that are winning right now,
05:36they can start losing.
05:38Jared Goff could get injured.
05:40Any one of those possibilities could happen.
05:42Now, I don't want us to rely on that,
05:44but what I am saying is in 13 days, a lot can happen.
05:48Thanks, guys.
05:49All right, thanks, Rich.
05:50That's true, although I will say this.
05:53Did you all even notice today
05:54that the Chiefs went out and made another acquisition?
05:57They went and got that linebacker off of the Patriots.
06:02It's pronounced Uche, Joshua Uche.
06:06I think that's how you pronounce it.
06:07And he's a solid pass-rushing linebacker.
06:11And after the Chiefs got DeAndre Hopkins,
06:13they just went out and got a pass-rushing linebacker
06:17and added him to the defense
06:18that I think is the best defense in the NFL.
06:21And so the Chiefs have already made two trades,
06:25and all they had to give up in this one was a sixth,
06:28and not even next year, it's in two years.
06:31A sixth-round pick in two years
06:34to pick up a pass-rushing linebacker
06:37that a lot of teams were after.
06:39So the Chiefs are making moves.
06:42Maybe the Niners are buying time.
06:43They wanted to see what was happening last night,
06:45but I would really love to see them
06:47get in on that market,
06:48and don't just make your acquisitions
06:51the guys who are coming back from injury.
06:53Yeah, it would be nice to have
06:55additional players on top of that.
06:56And the trade deadline, I believe, is in eight days,
06:59if I'm not mistaken, a week from Tuesday.
07:01So you still have plenty of time,
07:03and you get into the buy,
07:04and you've got an opportunity to really take a look
07:07at what you have and what you still significantly need.
07:10And I think an interior defensive lineman
07:12is first and foremost on that list.
07:15Rich makes a good point about continuity,
07:18and I was talking to a friend of mine
07:20who's on a defensive staff in the NFL,
07:22and one thing that he was saying was exactly that,
07:25because we were talking about Nick Sorensen,
07:26and a new coordinator again for the 49ers.
07:29And he said to me that it takes time
07:32with a coach and a team to develop continuity,
07:35and for the coach to know what the players can do.
07:37And I know he's been on the staff,
07:39but he's coordinating for the first time,
07:41and you have a lot of new players on this defense.
07:43So it does take a significant amount of time
07:46for everyone to get on the same page and gel.
07:48And I disagree with Rich about the defense last night,
07:52because you played bend but don't break,
07:54pre-vent, and Dallas scored, fine.
07:57You kind of knew that was gonna happen.
07:59For me, the issue was what you then did
08:01with your offensive possession,
08:03and you got your defense right back on the field.
08:05That, for me, was the bigger problem.
08:07But did you just say the trade deadline
08:08is a week from tomorrow?
08:10I thought it was November 4th, if I'm not mistaken.
08:13Is that a week from tomorrow?
08:15Is that a week from tomorrow, November 4th?
08:18November 4th is a week from today.
08:21So I was gonna say.
08:22Oh, it's November 5th then.
08:23Is it?
08:24Yeah, yep.
08:25They literally put the trade deadline on election day?
08:28Yeah, why wouldn't they?
08:28The NFL's king.
08:30Forget your cute little,
08:32who's gonna be the dog catcher in podunk.
08:35I was gonna vote, but the Niners got Deontay Johnson.
08:37I got distracted, and I ran out of time.
08:41So here we are.
08:42One o'clock, our time.
08:44One o'clock, our time.
08:45November 5th.
08:46Next Tuesday.
08:47Correct.
08:48Okay.
08:48Yeah, I thought it was the 4th.
08:49I thought the 4th was the Tuesday, but it's the 5th.
08:52So there you have it.
08:54There you have it.
08:55You've got eight days.
08:56And by the way, for those who are interested
08:58in wide receivers, and it was said to be
09:00that a lot of teams are after them,
09:02one of the two players generating the most interest,
09:05Christian Kirk of the Jacksonville Jaguars,
09:08broken collarbone, out for the year.
09:10Oh no.
09:11So to me, the price now goes up maybe a touch
09:13for Deontay Johnson.
09:15He's the clear, clear top man available.
09:19Free agent at the end of the year.
09:20Won't cost you much.
09:21And it's funny that people are all saying,
09:23yeah, we're all after wide receivers.
09:25I'm looking at the teams who are real contenders.
09:29You're not gonna acquire the guy if you're not a contender.
09:31Buffalo already got Cooper.
09:34The Chiefs already got Hopkins.
09:36Devontae Adams has already moved.
09:38I guess maybe the Steelers.
09:42The Steelers are in on the wide receiver market.
09:44It would be funny for them to acquire Deontay Johnson.
09:46They just had him a couple years ago and let him walk.
09:50Maybe the Ravens, but I doubt it.
09:52The Texans are getting Nico Collins back.
09:55Maybe the Commanders want a receiver.
09:58I could see that.
09:59The Lions definitely don't.
10:01The Falcons don't.
10:02The Bucks would be the other team.
10:04They just lost Godwin for the year
10:05and Evans for a few weeks.
10:07They're sitting there at four and four.
10:09I don't think anybody else in the NFC West
10:11wants to acquire wide receivers.
10:13There's a lot of talk about him,
10:14but I just don't see a huge line of teams.
10:17I know you're out on the idea.
10:20I don't know, man.
10:21I don't know.
10:22I'd love to see the Niners go,
10:23yes, show up the run defense.
10:25I'd love to go see him get another weapon
10:27and have a little bit more depth at that position.
10:29It's very possible.
10:30And Ian Rappaport yesterday said that
10:35reportedly Kyle Shanahan likes Deontay Johnson
10:38and that he thinks that they would be a good target,
10:40a good landing destination for Deontay Johnson.
10:43And even if the price does go up
10:46because now you lose Christian Kirk
10:48off the possible trade marketplace,
10:51you do have a ton of picks.
10:52And as I mentioned last week,
10:55you've got more comp picks coming in,
10:57third round picks for losing D'Amico Ryans
11:02and Ran Carthon.
11:04So you get picks for losing those execs.
11:06So you're gonna have more third rounders coming in.
11:09Plus you've got some comp picks for free agents
11:11you lost last year that the value of those is still pending.
11:15I do think there's a little bit of a hesitation
11:20to go block Ricky Pearsall
11:22because they do like what they see and he's now here
11:25and he's a first rounder.
11:27But I just, man, I get so concerned
11:29because Debo is hurt so much
11:32and Jawan is coming back, but he's coming off injury.
11:35And it just feels like the group
11:37gets really thin really fast.
11:39Conference call today, Kyle Shanahan was asked
11:42if the wide receiver possession
11:43would be addressed at the deadline.
11:46It's not necessary to just try to address certain positions.
11:48You look at what's available
11:50that you think can help your team get better.
11:51And if there's anything out there that's available
11:53that we think can help our team get better in the immediate
11:56without hurting us for the future,
11:58that's something we always look and know.
11:59Okay, that's not a no.
12:02That's not a no.
12:03So I'd love to see Deontay Johnson end up on the 49ers.
12:07I really, really would.
12:09Just interesting factoid about yesterday,
12:12just looking at some of the numbers,
12:13Chris Conley led the 49ers in wide receiver snaps.
12:18He played in 76% of the snaps, 52 snaps,
12:23and he got one target.
12:24So that might tell you the priority
12:27of what Kyle Shanahan sees in the receiver room.
12:31I'm sure those would go to Juwan if he were here.
12:34Right.
12:35And he should be at the next game.
12:36They have announced they expect him back
12:39in two weeks at Tampa Bay.
12:40But again, I don't know.
12:42It feels foolish to think that no one's gonna get hurt
12:45for the rest of the year with the way it's gone so far.
12:47Agreed, but I also look at what they do
12:49with their wide receivers and they don't really use
12:52or need, like Deontay Johnson, if he comes in here,
12:55he's probably not gonna get 10 targets.
12:57They don't really use their receivers like that.
12:59That's okay.
13:00Yep.
13:02He's done with six targets.
13:02I mean, he'd be lucky to get six.
13:04Yeah, Brandon Aiyuk put up 1,300 yards last year
13:06getting six or seven targets a game.
13:08Yeah, he got 95 targets.
13:11It's about right.
13:12Yeah.
13:13So it's about six targets a game.
13:14If that five or six targets, and even yesterday,
13:17like you had Debo get seven, Pierce all four,
13:20and Ronnie Bell had one.
13:22So you don't really have a lot of targets to go around.
13:26How about Matt in San Rafael?
13:27Hi, Matt.
13:28Thanks for calling.
13:30Hey, guys.
13:32So I was there last night and there were a couple things
13:36that from being in the stadium, first of all,
13:40Purdy, I thought he had an okay first half.
13:44I thought the whole team offensively sort of struggled
13:47in the first half.
13:48And then he was amazing in the third quarter in particular.
13:52But the two things that struck me is,
13:55one, it doesn't seem like the team,
14:00and particularly the defense,
14:02can stay totally focused for four quarters.
14:05They have letdowns.
14:07And maybe it's the coordinator, I don't know.
14:09I don't really agree with Dan
14:11that they were playing prevent
14:13because Dallas scored in less than a minute
14:16with, I believe, no timeouts.
14:18So that was kind of shocking to see.
14:22The other thing is the offense has defined an identity.
14:32And I don't think that they found it.
14:35They had a great quarter.
14:37And it's the first really great quarter
14:38I've seen them have in a while.
14:40But it seems like Kyle,
14:42it's like he's coaching not to lose when he gets a lead.
14:46And I think that hamstrings him a lot
14:49as far as his play calling.
14:50Again, fourth quarter,
14:52where it felt like he was slipping away.
14:54They need to find who they are as an offense
14:57and as a team, I think,
14:59if they're gonna make the kind of progress
15:02that we want them to make
15:03and that they're gonna be able to make
15:04any kind of run at the end of this.
15:07Matt, thanks.
15:07I will say this.
15:08It's interesting when people say
15:10Kyle is coaching not to lose.
15:13Sometimes I feel like we get going with narratives
15:16that we've had from previous years
15:18and then we stick with them
15:20when things sort of play out in a frustrating way.
15:23I don't think you can accuse Kyle Shanahan
15:25of playing not to lose
15:26when he literally comes out in that set of downs
15:29where you're trying to burn the other team's timeouts
15:31and he throws the ball all three times.
15:34Or tries to, anyway.
15:35You can accuse him of being overly aggressive.
15:38Agreed.
15:38Overly, not playing not to lose.
15:41He might be playing to win a little bit too much.
15:44I don't have a problem with the first down pass.
15:46I certainly don't have a problem with the third down pass
15:48because now it's third and long.
15:50The second and three,
15:51where instead of running the ball to Garendo,
15:53you drop Brock back.
15:55Garendo misses a block
15:56and Brock gets absolutely torched.
15:59Listen, the 49ers today sit here incredibly lucky
16:03that he did not fumble that football.
16:05If he fumbles that football,
16:07the Niners might have given Brock Purdy the ball,
16:10trailing 31 to 30
16:12and looking for a field goal to win the game
16:14with a kicker you just signed off the street
16:16a week and a half ago.
16:17Yeah, that happens at your own 37.
16:20So second and three,
16:22and they tried to pass it on first down.
16:24They didn't and he scrambled for seven
16:26and then second and three, you're absolutely right.
16:28Just run the ball there.
16:29Run it, make them burn a timeout,
16:31which they did because you got sacked.
16:33And then third and 10,
16:34you had to pass it and you checked down to use check
16:37and they used their final timeout.
16:38And to the caller's point,
16:40it was the previous drive where they did play prevent
16:44and Dallas didn't score in a minute.
16:45It was the drive after that
16:48that they were able to score in a minute.
16:49And it was C.D. Lamb, 70 yards and three catches.
16:53And that wasn't them playing prevent,
16:55that was just C.D. Lamb owning them.
16:57We're presented by Fremont Bank
16:58celebrating 60 years of full-service banking
17:00with no compromises.
17:02Based on preseason expectations,
17:04it was Super Bowl or bust.
17:06Now, many people just happy that they got to four and four
17:10and they're tied for first.
