00:00I'm Emmanuel Okasanya, music editor at Ebony.
00:08It's your boy Godspeed.
00:09And so today we're in Brooklyn, New York.
00:11We're about to be chatting with Godspeed about his latest projects.
00:13Coming off the tour with Cash Cobain.
00:15And we also got his parents in the mix today.
00:17Godspeed is a pioneer.
00:19I say when I first started out DJing, I didn't want to be a club DJ.
00:23I didn't want to be boxed in.
00:25I saw myself as an artist DJ.
00:28And what I wanted to do was kind of like give artists the platform to kind of showcase their music.
00:34Because at that time, like right before the pandemic, it wasn't really like a lot going on.
00:39And people weren't paying attention to like the underground culture.
00:42Once I got the opportunity to like start DJing at these parties and these different clubs,
00:47I wanted to like put my people on, you know, put my community on.
00:51It started with a good friend of mine, Lee Paris.
00:53I told him, I'm like, I'm your DJ.
00:55So in that, you know, he had a lot of opportunity and touched a lot of different stages.
01:00And I'm just like, this is where I want to be.
01:02You know, so I started, I moved on to another artist called Stache.
01:06He had a song called Sticky at the time that had the city going crazy.
01:10And in that, and us just, you know, being around the city, performing at these different clubs,
01:14I'm just like, I want to do this for all the underground artists that I like, you know, come in contact with.
01:19Then I met Cash Cobain.
01:21I used to throw these underground parties like right before the pandemic, when they were shutting down clubs.
01:25And I just told Cash, like, you need to see what's going on outside of like the Queens movement and like what's going on out there.
01:31Like it's a whole nother, it's a whole nother culture out here in the city and in Brooklyn.
01:35He came out the first time. And then after that, he was like hitting me up every weekend.
01:39Just like, yo, where are we at tonight? Where are we at tonight?
01:42And, you know, just playing these different records that not everybody in the city or in Brooklyn knew.
01:46Kind of come until now where we're here and like we have the culture in the city, you know.
01:51I never thought that we would be at the forefront of like a whole wave, a whole movement like this.
01:58That's like, it's touching different states, different countries, you know, like I went to London.
02:02They're on some sexy drill vibes now. It's crazy.
02:06But it's also a blessing at the same time, just because of what it came from, the original drill to what it is now.
02:12I'm glad we were able to push a positive, sexy narrative.
02:16Sexy drill is something that during my sets, like I never wanted to play the regular drill vibe
02:22just because that's not the energy that I want to bring to my set.
02:25Sexy drill kind of eliminates that like negative, kind of like violent aspect to the party
02:31and brings that like more fun, sexy dance.
02:35Like, you know, you want to move your shoulders, you want to kind of like move your body, hit the wave a little something.
02:41I feel like I'm really putting Queens and just New York City on a map.
02:45Even when artists come to the city, they make sure that they got to come to a Godspeed party.
02:49A Godspeed party in three words.
02:52Number one, I'm going to say vibey, very vibey.
02:56Two, I would say drunk.
03:01And three, I would say memorable.
03:04I feel like number one, it starts with the music.
03:07I freestyle every time I DJ.
03:09There's not like a set playlist.
03:11I don't make a folder for anything I'm going to play for the night.
03:14I go off the people.
03:16I feel like anybody who's come out with Godspeed, you can never say you didn't have a good time.
03:21So now we out in New York, in Manhattan.
03:23Speed, tell us where we at.
03:24Hey man, we at one of my favorite showrooms.
03:26Not only do we do music, but we get fly too.
03:29Shout out my boy Dax.
03:30So explain your personal style like three words.
03:33Number two, I would say cozy.
03:34I always like to be cozy.
03:35When I'm DJing, I don't like jeans.
03:38I really don't.
03:39You could just say swaggy.
03:41It'll be the accessories.
03:42I'll probably get a cool headpiece or some flashy jewelry or some cool glasses.
04:05You
