00:04:30Voila!
00:04:31Chocolate?
00:04:32There you go.
00:04:33Merci.
00:04:52Hey, what are you doing?
00:04:54I just saw something covered in chocolate and whipped cream go by.
00:04:58Can we get some dessert?
00:04:59Oh, honey, we're not dressed for that place.
00:05:01Dad?
00:05:02Come on, let's just finish up.
00:05:03I'll buy you an ice cream.
00:05:09Looks like it's going to be a bit colder in the base in Vista Grande.
00:05:12But we could sure use the rain.
00:05:13Thanks, Storm.
00:05:14And that's your Channel 17 weekend weather forecast from Storm Collins.
00:05:18And now, Redmond Roads has the place to dine this weekend in the Central Valley.
00:05:23Thank you, Nora.
00:05:24And yes, indeed, last night I had probably the most amazing meal I've ever had.
00:05:29Which is why Redmond Roads restaurant recommendation for this weekend takes us to the city of Merced.
00:05:34And a delightful eating establishment called Little Italy.
00:05:38Where the pasta was not only spectacular, but, and this is rare these days, Nora, entirely homemade.
00:05:44That sounds delicious.
00:05:46Little Italy had big flavor, huh, Redmond?
00:05:48Yes, indeed, Nora.
00:05:49But not big prices.
00:05:51I'm Redmond Roads.
00:05:55Anna, can you take these out to the trash?
00:05:57Then we can head out.
00:06:07I'm sorry.
00:06:08I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.
00:06:10I apologize.
00:06:11Here's your book.
00:06:12Les Miserables.
00:06:14It's a wonderful book.
00:06:15You speak French?
00:06:16Yes.
00:06:17Oui, je parle.
00:06:18I speak, I lived in France for several years.
00:06:21Is it beautiful?
00:06:22It is, it's just, it's gorgeous.
00:06:25My mom was really into French stuff.
00:06:27Yeah?
00:06:28This was her book.
00:06:30Marrying it together.
00:06:33We even planned a family vacation to Paris.
00:06:35Ah, you were, you were planning.
00:06:37What happened?
00:06:41My mom had cancer.
00:06:44She got better, we were all gonna go to Paris together.
00:06:48She never did get better.
00:06:50Anna, I'm sorry.
00:06:52I'm really sorry, honey.
00:06:55It's fine.
00:06:58Yeah, I gotcha.
00:07:00I gotcha.
00:07:02I studied French last year in school.
00:07:04Did you?
00:07:05Well, très bien.
00:07:07Nous devrions parler français.
00:07:10Okay, um.
00:07:12You said something like, that's good?
00:07:14Yes.
00:07:15And that we can talk in French?
00:07:17Exactement.
00:07:19Very good.
00:07:20If you ever want to speak French, just, you know, I'm the chef next door in the restaurant.
00:07:24Come on over and we'll talk any time you want.
00:07:27Thanks.
00:07:28You're welcome.
00:07:29I saw someone order this chocolate thing with whipped cream on it.
00:07:33It looked amazing.
00:07:34Yes.
00:07:35Did you make that?
00:07:36I certainly did.
00:07:37Crêpes au chocolat, chocolate crepes, I'll make them for you any time.
00:07:40Just come on over, alright?
00:07:43You're welcome.
00:07:44I'm Sarah.
00:07:45I'm Hannah.
00:07:46Hannah, nice to meet you.
00:07:48Au revoir, Sarah.
00:07:49Au revoir, Hannah.
00:07:52À tout à l'heure.
00:08:04Hey, tell Taylor I said hi.
00:08:05I will.
00:08:06Alright, you two have a good night.
00:08:07See you later.
00:08:11Well, we're finished, kiddo.
00:08:12Tomorrow's opening day.
00:08:14We gotta celebrate.
00:08:15Well, can we go next door and get that chocolate crepe thing?
00:08:17Really?
00:08:18That's what you want to do?
00:08:20Because I was sick of pizza in a movie.
00:08:21Dad, come on.
00:08:23How much do you think we're going to go out to eat when you're running your own restaurant?
00:08:26This could be our last chance.
00:08:29You're a little dramatic, but you make a point.
00:08:34Think I need a tuxedo for this fancy French place?
00:08:38If you do that in there, I'll tell everyone you kidnapped me.
00:08:45Hi.
00:08:46Welcome to Chez Varenne.
00:08:48Have you guys been here before?
00:08:50Oh, no, but Chef Sarah said she made crepe chocolat for me.
00:08:54You know Chef Westbrook?
00:08:56I met her the other night.
00:08:58You did?
00:09:00Well, take a moment to look over the menu, and I will let Chef Westbrook, Sarah, know that you're here.
00:09:06Oh, hey, that's not necessary.
00:09:12Chef Westbrook?
00:09:13Yes?
00:09:14So, the little girl at table four said she knows you.
00:09:17I thought maybe you'd want to say hello.
00:09:21You know a little girl?
00:09:25Hey, Hannah.
00:09:26Hey, Sarah.
00:09:27It's good to see you.
00:09:28You too.
00:09:30Oh.
00:09:32This is your father?
00:09:36Yeah.
00:09:37Oh.
00:09:40How nice.
00:09:41Honey, you know what? Chef Westbrook's really busy. Why don't we just order?
00:09:43Okay.
00:09:44What can I tell you about the menu?
00:09:45Well, uh, what is...
00:09:52Um, what is...
00:09:55Excellent pronunciation.
00:09:58It is veal cooked with ham and cheese in a...
00:10:02Veal?
00:10:03Yes.
00:10:04Oh, no, no. I can't eat veal.
00:10:06It's baby cow, and they lock them up.
00:10:08You know what, Hannah? I absolutely felt the same way when I was your age.
00:10:10Honestly, you don't know what you're missing. It's very, very delicious.
00:10:13But, uh, I respect your views.
00:10:15What else looks good?
00:10:16What is, uh, beef carpaccio?
00:10:19Beef carpaccio?
00:10:20It's a raw beef, and it's cooked very lightly in a lemon juice.
00:10:23Honey, why don't you just have the whole roasted chicken? That's simple enough.
00:10:26Actually, no. She'll have the beef bourguignon, which is just basically beef stew with a better publicist.
00:10:30I'll have the duck confit.
00:10:32That's confit. Duck confit.
00:10:34An excellent choice.
00:10:35Merci.
00:10:36De rien.
00:10:41She's really nice.
00:10:42Isn't she?
00:10:50One beef bourguignon and a duck confit, please.
00:10:53Your new little friend is with...
00:10:56Her father, who also happens to be the jerk next door.
00:10:59Really? The firefighter?
00:11:02I don't know. He's so handsome.
00:11:04No, he's not. He's a barbarian. He called my beef bourguignon beef stew.
00:11:09No.
00:11:13I know. Get back to work, Patsy. Hang on.
00:11:18What is that?
00:11:20Why are you making us do this in the rain and the fog and the cold and the...
00:11:24Because, we say, everything we cook and everything we cook has butter in it.
00:11:27Not that much.
00:11:29Patsy, we buy 35 pounds of butter every week.
00:11:31Yes, and sometimes we have some left over.
00:11:33Yeah? Oh, yeah?
00:11:34Yeah.
00:11:36How are you running off the butter?
00:11:38I think you're running off the fight with Mr. Handsome Firefighter.
00:11:40Would you stop calling him that? Besides, it's healthy to run off negative feelings.
00:11:43It's not healthy.
00:11:46It's not healthy when you're this old.
00:11:47So, okay, then let's slow down.
00:11:49As I was saying, it is not healthy to replace your attraction with exercise.
00:11:54You know, just because you get hot and sweaty out here doesn't mean you're still not all hot and bothered about him.
00:12:00Patsy, please.
00:12:01Besides, you know, I can't believe that he is Hannah's father.
00:12:05Such a sweet, wonderful little girl.
00:12:07How could she have such a cretin for a father?
00:12:09Maybe he's not such a cretin after all.
00:12:14Come on, now. Speed it up.
00:12:16But hold on. Seriously.
00:12:17You know what? You're such a weenie.
00:12:19Wait, wait, wait. Come on.
00:12:20Come on. It's good for the waist.
00:12:21All right. Ready?
00:12:23I'm ready.
00:12:24We're ready.
00:12:25Let's do this, Dad.
00:12:27Okay.
00:12:30There you go.
00:12:31Awesome.
00:12:34What do we do now?
00:12:36There's no weight.
00:12:37Weight?
00:12:38We were told there would be no weight.
00:12:41Gee, Mrs. Stanford.
00:12:43Come on in.
00:12:44In over two minutes, how could there be a weight? Let's go.
00:12:46Welcome.
00:12:49I don't want to go here.
00:12:50No, Dad.
00:12:51Oh, look.
00:12:52Hey, want to try this new one?
00:12:54Yeah.
00:12:55Let's go on.
00:12:56Hey, welcome to the Five Alarm Grill. Come on in.
00:12:58Hi.
00:12:59Welcome, everyone.
00:13:03Hi, welcome.
00:13:04Hey, Detective Bates, Detective Ramirez.
00:13:05Why don't you guys sit right there?
00:18:47These are hard-boiled.
00:19:13These are all hard-boiled.
00:19:20Amateur.
00:19:21Okay, well, looks like we're having a deviled egg special in honor of the devil next door.
00:19:24Okay, man.
00:19:25I'm with you.
00:19:26Hey, can you grab me the bacon from the fridge?
00:19:33Pretend pig, soy, vegan, pork, substitute.
00:19:37Gil, no one should have to eat this stuff.
00:19:42Nice touch, neighbor.
00:19:44Game on.
00:19:46Um, this man says that he's here from the health department.
00:19:51Something about an anonymous tip that the restaurant was in need of an inspection.
00:19:59Nice.
00:20:08Oh, no.
00:20:09Did someone have a little visitor from the county health department?
00:20:13I did.
00:20:15Isn't it pretty?
00:20:29Sneaky McFrenchy.
00:20:30Whoa.
00:20:31Well, she's in over her head.
00:20:33Put in another CD.
00:20:34Yeah.
00:20:35Uh, Bach.
00:20:36Mozart.
00:20:37Wagner.
00:20:39Verdi and Stravinsky.
00:20:45Wow.
00:20:46Seriously?
00:20:50I suppose you have an opinion on our music.
00:20:52Yes, yes, I do, actually.
00:20:54It's beautiful.
00:20:55Feel free to turn that up.
00:20:57Have a good one.
00:21:00Patsy.
00:21:01Hmm?
00:21:02Why did I open a restaurant in a recession?
00:21:05Is it bad?
00:21:07No, it's about the same.
00:21:10It's just, eventually, it's not going to cut it.
00:21:13We're just getting by at this point.
00:21:15Well, what can we change?
00:21:17Well, obviously, my postcards didn't work.
00:21:19Nor did the coupons in the newspapers.
00:21:21We have to...
00:21:23I don't know.
00:21:25People have got to know that we're here, you know?
00:21:27We've got to...
00:21:28Maybe that's not the problem.
00:21:29What do you mean?
00:21:30I mean, the restaurant is lovely, really.
00:21:32But your prices are higher than a lot of other places nearby.
00:21:35I mean, the Five Alarm Grill doesn't seem to be suffering because of the economy.
00:21:38You know, the five...
00:21:39Our prices are higher because the quality of our ingredients is higher.
00:21:42We have artful presentations that...
00:21:44But, no, no, no, no, no.
00:21:45That is part of the problem, too.
00:21:47I mean, look, because high-end fare is not family-friendly.
00:21:50It's not...
00:21:51It's not...
00:21:52It's not...
00:21:53Because high-end fare is not family-friendly.
00:21:55I mean, last month, you refused to serve a family ketchup for their little girl.
00:21:59Look, perhaps if you served simpler fare, then maybe...
00:22:02Patsy, I'm a classically trained French chef.
00:22:04I'm not going to dumb down my food.
00:22:07We've got to beef up our marketing efforts.
00:22:10That sounds like a good idea.
00:22:12And now we welcome Redmond Rhodes, who has the place to eat this week.
00:22:16Oh, my gosh.
00:22:18That's it. That's perfect.
00:22:19What?
00:22:20What?
00:22:21Magic at the Fair Oaks Cafe.
00:22:23The Channel 17 News anchor, Redmond Rhodes, he does a weekly restaurant recommendation.
00:22:27And last week, they did a show in the seafood place down the street.
00:22:31And I walked by on Saturday, there was a line at the door.
00:22:33This is so what I'm going to do.
00:22:34This is unbelievably perfect.
00:22:35Wait a minute.
00:22:36Hold on.
00:22:37I'm going to e-mail them.
00:22:38And it's free publicity, Patsy.
00:22:39It's free.
00:22:47Thank you very much.
00:22:48Have a good day.
00:22:52Good. Good.
00:22:55Hannah?
00:22:56It's Sarah.
00:22:57I see you everywhere now.
00:22:59You shopping for onions?
00:23:00Yeah.
00:23:01My dad sent me over here to get some.
00:23:03He'll be back in a minute.
00:23:04Ah.
00:23:05All right.
00:23:06Well, it was good to see you.
00:23:08All right.
00:23:09I've got to rush off, but I'll see you around.
00:23:11Sarah?
00:23:12Yeah?
00:23:13Do you know which kinds I should get?
00:23:15Because my dad said to get two dozen, but I didn't know there were so many kinds.
00:23:19Yeah.
00:23:20That's actually a really good question, because there's a bunch of different varieties that we use for different things.
00:23:24The yellow onions are really good for sauteing, good for sauces and soups, creams.
00:23:30But those are the ones that make you cry a lot.
00:23:32The Spanish onion.
00:23:33Now, this one is a little bit sweeter.
00:23:36You're going to want to use this one for onion rings.
00:23:38Okay.
00:23:39We need those.
00:23:40I figured as much.
00:23:41Now, red onions are really the only onions that you're going to want to eat raw.
00:23:46I'm going to assume that your dad's going to be putting these on burgers and sandwiches.
00:23:49You're right.
00:23:50Yeah.
00:23:51Wow.
00:23:52Well, listen, I really do have to rush off, but you'll come speak French with me sometime?
00:23:57Yeah.
00:23:58All right.
00:23:59All right.
00:24:00Bye.
00:24:01Bye.
00:24:02Kiddo.
00:24:03Dad.
00:24:04Chef Westbrook helping you pick out some onions, huh?
00:24:07Yes.
00:24:08You know, those are actually really good onions.
00:24:10You know what these are for?
00:24:11What?
00:24:12These are for juggling.
00:24:13Da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da.
00:24:16Ba da boom.
00:24:18Dad, do you and Sarah not like each other or something?
00:24:25I wouldn't say we don't like each other.
00:24:28She's a bit, um...
00:24:30Okay, I'm...
00:24:31You know what?
00:24:32You need vegetables.
00:24:33Dad, answer the question.
00:24:36These are juggling potatoes.
00:24:39I'll leave you to our special.
00:24:42Hey, Dad, I'm gonna hang out next door.
00:24:44Pour un poilet francais avec Sarah.
00:24:47Okay, Hannah, sure.
00:24:49What's the matter?
00:24:51Uh, well, I just bought all this crab at the market, and I was gonna make the crab cakes that we made the other night.
00:24:56Oh, those were really good.
00:24:57Yeah, those were good.
00:24:58These are not.
00:24:59Gil, you just dropped a bunch of cash on some crab and put a big sign outside that announces we're having crab cake as a special.
00:25:07Are you telling me we're not serving them?
00:25:08Well, I'm not gonna serve crab mush sandwiches.
00:25:10Not to mention the mush I've got going here doesn't taste right.
00:25:13So as far as the customers are concerned, we're out of crab.
00:25:15At 11 o'clock in the morning.
00:25:36Hey, Hannah, you here to speak some French, mademoiselle?
00:25:38Actually, I need a favor.
00:25:43Yes.
00:25:51Did your dad change the recipe at all?
00:25:53No, my dad doesn't use recipes.
00:25:55He says cooking's about instinct.
00:25:57You just know when it's good.
00:25:59Oh, clearly that's not true.
00:26:02Um, all right, what we've got here is...
00:26:05Crab.
00:26:06Eggs.
00:26:07Breadcrumbs.
00:26:09Probably some mayonnaise.
00:26:10Some Dijon mustard.
00:26:12Lemon juice from a bottle, unfortunately.
00:26:15Black pepper and some green onion.
00:26:18And way too much dill.
00:26:20Wow.
00:26:21You're like a food psychic.
00:26:23Yes, I am.
00:26:24And my psychic powers tells me that your dad made a little bit more than he usually makes today.
00:26:28Yeah, he did.
00:26:29Yeah, yeah.
00:26:30See, you know, some recipes you can't multiply without making changes.
00:26:34You know, the proportions are probably all off.
00:26:36Here.
00:26:38For your dad to try this.
00:26:40Thanks, Sarah.
00:26:41You're welcome.
00:26:42My pleasure.
00:26:44You know, I gotta tell you, you're like a natural-born chef.
00:26:46You know that?
00:26:47If you ever want a lesson, feel free to come over and we'll speak a little French while we're doing it.
00:26:51Oui?
00:26:53Awesome.
00:26:55Thanks, honey.
00:26:59Here you go.
00:27:01Um, you know, Hannah, can I ask you a question?
00:27:05Why did your dad decide to open up a restaurant?
00:27:11Um, a few months after my mom died.
00:27:15Dad had this really big, scary fire and the ceiling beam fell like a foot in front of him.
00:27:22After that, I didn't want to be a firefighter anymore.
00:27:30He used to cook for the whole fire station.
00:27:33So they all decided to open a restaurant together.
00:27:36That's a great idea.
00:27:38He sounds like a good dad.
00:27:40He's the best.
00:27:44You're welcome.
00:27:45You're welcome.
00:27:48Um, and Hannah, tell him to try, um, some fresh lemon zest.
00:27:53It's fresh lemon peel.
00:27:54Maybe some capers, too.
00:27:57You're welcome.
00:28:00Au revoir.
00:28:01Au revoir.
00:28:03Goodbye, sweetie.
00:28:05Thanks.
00:28:11Sarah Westbrook, that was very friendly of you.
00:28:19Anyway, I think that, uh, Hannah's dad and you have a little in common.
00:28:23Like what?
00:28:25Honey, a loss is a loss.
00:28:35Put that back outside.
00:28:37There's going to be crab cakes on the menu after all.
00:28:46Capers.
00:28:48Nice touch.
00:28:54Those are really good.
00:28:56You know what?
00:28:58Sarah totally saved the day.
00:29:00You did good, kid.
00:29:04What?
00:29:08It was a good night, honey.
00:29:09Not great.
00:29:11I don't know what to do.
00:29:13I invited local food critics to come and have a meal.
00:29:15I've had my friends write glowing reviews to CentralValleyEats.com.
00:29:20And I write Redmond Rhodes another email.
00:29:22Sarah, I think you're getting a little obsessed.
00:29:24You've emailed him.
00:29:25You left messages at the station.
00:29:27You send that guy one more note, he's not going to be doing a story on Chez Varenne.
00:29:30He's going to be reporting on a local restaurateur who's stalking him.
00:29:34Though that could work, too, if you're interested in another angle.
00:29:38It's not funny.
00:29:39It's a little funny.
00:29:46Thanks for coming, you guys.
00:29:48See you later.
00:29:51So, Taylor, Hannah, how is it growing up in a restaurant, huh?
00:29:55Not that different from growing up in a firehouse.
00:29:57Yeah, loud guys and tons of food.
00:30:00That is why you're starting dance classes Monday.
00:30:02So you can totally girl out.
00:30:04Then can Hannah sleep over?
00:30:06Yeah.
00:30:07Sure, why not?
00:30:08Yeah!
00:30:09Come on, Dad, can I?
00:30:10I guess so, but it's our day off tomorrow.
00:30:11What am I supposed to do?
00:30:13Maybe relax or something.
00:30:14By yourself, for a change.
00:30:16All right, you're done with this because I'm ready.
00:30:17Yes.
00:30:18Dish duty.
00:30:20Oh, my gosh, it's going to be so much fun.
00:30:22Welcome back to KXB Nightly News.
00:30:24I'm Nora Smithson.
00:30:25Good night, Sarah.
00:30:26Good night.
00:30:28...place to eat this weekend in the Central Valley.
00:30:30Thank you, Nora.
00:30:32No, we can't.
00:30:34We are not putting flowers or anything.
00:30:36We won't even have enough time.
00:30:38You'll be asleep at 7.30.
00:30:407.30?
00:30:41No.
00:30:427.30.
00:30:43No, no, no, no.
00:30:44That's way too early.
00:30:45Yes.
00:30:467.35.
00:30:47No!
00:30:48Seriously?
00:30:49It's on our side.
00:30:51We'll stick together.
00:30:52I think we'll stick together.
00:30:54It's on.
00:31:08Hey, Patsy, did you...
00:31:12Oh, it's you.
00:31:14Can I help you?
00:31:16Can I come in?
00:31:18By all means.
00:31:24Uh, Hannah told me that she came by and asked you to play food detective with my disastrous crab cakes.
00:31:30Yes.
00:31:31And these are much improved, so I want to thank you.
00:31:34And also, I thought you might want to try some.
00:31:36Oh, you're welcome.
00:31:37It was my pleasure.
00:31:38It's nothing, really.
00:31:39It's what I do.
00:31:40It's my job.
00:31:41Food.
00:31:42Yeah, but entertaining the whims of precocious nine-year-old girls is not, so thank you for that, too.
00:31:47She reminds me of myself at that age.
00:31:54So, uh...
00:31:55Oh, I'm sorry.
00:31:57Thank you, Nora.
00:31:58Well, let me tell you, I am still full from last night's dinner,
00:32:02which is why the Redmond Roads restaurant recommendation this Friday is in the city of Mr. Grande.
00:32:09That is, drumroll please,
00:32:13the Dharma Diner.
00:32:15Local animal shelters are asking for donations to help with the...
00:32:18Sorry about that.
00:32:20So, what, you don't like Indian food?
00:32:22Because I've been to that place.
00:32:23It's got amazing chicken vindaloo.
00:32:25Really? No, no, no.
00:32:26I love Indian food.
00:32:27I'm sure it's wonderful.
00:32:28It's just I was, uh, kind of...
00:32:32stupid.
00:32:34You were hoping Redmond Roads restaurant recommendation for this weekend would be Chez Varenne?
00:32:39Mm.
00:32:40Listen, I don't want to sound...
00:32:42I don't know, but who cares what a toupee with a suit thinks, right?
00:32:46Well, apparently, a lot of people do,
00:32:48because his broadcast has been known to have some very positive influence on restaurants.
00:32:55I was just hoping for maybe a little bit of a boost a restaurant needs.
00:33:00A little boost.
00:33:04I'm closed on Mondays.
00:33:06I know you're closed, too.
00:33:08I was wondering if I could take you to lunch.
00:33:11This is a thank you,
00:33:13which, considering everything, would mean declaring a truce first.
00:33:18Good one. I know you're kidding.
00:33:20I'm not.
00:33:28Okay.
00:33:43Wow, you sure do know how to wine and dine a girl.
00:33:45Never been taken to a food truck before.
00:33:48Trust me.
00:33:59I'm back.
00:34:01Brought a new kid.
00:34:06Is this the best shrimp sandwich you've ever had?
00:34:08The best. Not only the first, but the best, yes.
00:34:10So, the shrimp, it's marinated in a coconut bourbon reduction, yes?
00:34:15Yep.
00:34:17And I do believe I detect some Thai basil, poblano chili,
00:34:22a little bit of garlic, and, well, green curry, obviously.
00:34:26Wow. Yes, exactly.
00:34:29Hannah was right. You're like a food psychic.
00:34:32I do eat more than Keishon Green says.
00:34:35I do eat more than Keishon Green says.
00:34:41This is really beautiful.
00:34:44This is nothing.
00:34:46Are those comfortable?
00:34:48My shoes, yes.
00:34:49You want beautiful?
00:34:51I'll show you beautiful.
00:34:52Hey, hey, hey!
00:34:54Oh, my goodness!
00:34:57Oh!
00:35:05Wow.
00:35:07Feels like we're a million miles from the city.
00:35:10I know, right?
00:35:13Nice.
00:35:15Impressive.
00:35:17Here we go!
00:35:19Where are you going? I got the keys.
00:35:22It's beautiful!
00:35:27Hey, look.
00:35:28Huh?
00:35:29Look at this.
00:35:31Oh!
00:35:33Oh!
00:35:34It's like a little daisy.
00:35:36Daisy.
00:35:37It's my cat's name.
00:35:39Oh, yeah?
00:35:40Yeah.
00:35:41Is that your favorite flower?
00:35:42Oh, my mom's.
00:35:43My mom's favorite flowers are daisies.
00:35:45Oh.
00:35:46It's a nice tribute.
00:35:48Where did the name Chez Varenne come from?
00:35:50Well, François-Pierre de Lavarenne
00:35:52was one of the founding fathers of French cuisine
00:35:55back in the time of Louis XIV.
00:35:57Yeah, when you think of the mastery that is French cooking,
00:36:01the precision and the technique,
00:36:03you think Varenne.
00:36:04Voilà.
00:36:05Chez Varenne.
00:36:06Huh.
00:36:07Really? What?
00:36:08I'm just wondering why you would
00:36:10pick such a sentimental name for your cat
00:36:12but not your restaurant.
00:36:13Well, a cat is a living, breathing thing
00:36:15that you care for.
00:36:16Yeah, but so is a restaurant.
00:36:18In order for it to thrive, it needs
00:36:20love,
00:36:22attention,
00:36:24it needs community.
00:36:27How's that any different from a pet?
00:36:31But it could be wrong.
00:36:32Oh, I think it's a very good point.
00:36:40What?
00:36:42I just wanted to let you know that, um,
00:36:45Hannah told me about your wife
00:36:47and I wanted to say how very sorry I was.
00:36:51But that obviously you are doing an amazing job with Hannah.
00:36:57Well, thank you.
00:36:58She's a big fan of yours, by the way.
00:37:02Well, baby, it's because we have something in common.
00:37:06Oh?
00:37:07I lost both of my parents when, um,
00:37:10when I was 15.
00:37:12Drunk driver.
00:37:14Sarah, I'm sorry.
00:37:16Yeah, me too.
00:37:24Daisy!
00:37:26You are not going to believe the day I had.
00:37:28Come here, sweet girl.
00:37:30Oh, I
00:37:33am covered in dirt
00:37:35and I had lunch in a food truck.
00:37:38I love when you hug me.
00:37:40And I had the best day I've had
00:37:43in a really long time.
00:38:01Oh.
00:38:02Oh.
00:38:30Hello.
00:38:31Hiya.
00:38:32That was great.
00:38:34Fine.
00:38:35You know, I don't, I don't know.
00:38:38It was,
00:38:40it was fine.
00:38:41Great with an immediate downgrade to fine.
00:38:43You want to talk about it?
00:38:45Nothing to talk about.
00:38:46Sarah?
00:38:47Should I get started on the bread?
00:38:49I think.
00:38:53You're humming.
00:38:57Sarah Westbrook doesn't hum.
00:39:02So, how was your day off?
00:39:04Why?
00:39:05I mean, it was just an average day.
00:39:06I went for a hike, got something to eat, that's all.
00:39:08If it was such an average day,
00:39:09why does it sound like you need to go to confession to deal with it?
00:39:13Sarah, where's the salmon?
00:39:16Oh.
00:39:19What?
00:39:20I didn't go to the market yesterday.
00:39:22We're out of salmon.
00:39:24You forgot?
00:39:25Oh, that's a first.
00:39:26I did not forget, Patsy.
00:39:28I was out all day
00:39:29and I,
00:39:30we have ham.
00:39:31I will make a nice ham and roasted vegetable terrine.
00:39:35You know, that sounds delicious.
00:39:42Gil, Gil.
00:39:44Seriously?
00:39:47It's growing on me.
00:39:51Get a guy a break, okay?
00:39:53His judgment is clouded at the moment.
00:40:00Okay.
00:40:14All right, that's it.
00:40:16Oh, what is wrong with you?
00:40:18You tell me.
00:40:19You've been all over the place all day.
00:40:21There's something up.
00:40:22What is it?
00:40:23There's something wrong with me.
00:40:24May I have my cream back?
00:40:26Did something happen yesterday?
00:40:29What would happen yesterday?
00:40:30It was my day off.
00:40:31Simple.
00:40:33Aha.
00:40:35You're ridiculous, Patsy.
00:40:36You know that?
00:40:38All right, then.
00:40:39I am on strike until you talk.
00:40:41What?
00:40:43So that's what I did with my day off.
00:40:45Oh, that's great.
00:40:46Yeah?
00:40:47Yeah.
00:40:48Yeah.
00:40:49Gil, it's been two years.
00:40:52It's okay to get excited about someone, okay?
00:40:55Kate would have wanted that for you.
00:40:56I know that.
00:40:57I know that here.
00:40:59Not so much here.
00:41:01Plus, I worry about Hannah.
00:41:03Well, you said yourself that Hannah loves her.
00:41:05She does.
00:41:06And what happens if she gets all attached and it doesn't work out?
00:41:09Ah, nice to put the cart before the horse, buddy.
00:41:14I think you're just freaked out about dating.
00:41:16How long has it been?
00:41:17Sixteen years.
00:41:19Yeah, it's probably time to get back on that horse, man.
00:41:22That's the one that's in front of the cart?
00:41:24Yeah, that's the one.
00:41:30Patsy, can you please get back here and peel the potatoes?
00:41:33I will get to that as soon as you talk.
00:41:35Patsy, please, don't be ridiculous.
00:41:37So?
00:41:38What happened yesterday?
00:41:40I went, I had a, I went on a kind of date.
00:41:45That's it.
00:41:46With, with Gil.
00:41:49Gil.
00:41:51Gil, the handsome firefighter Gil?
00:41:53Yes.
00:41:55Oh, Sarah, that's fantastic.
00:41:59Ah.
00:42:01Maybe.
00:42:02You know, I don't know.
00:42:04Well, was it a nice date?
00:42:08Yeah, it was nice. It was very nice.
00:42:10But that's not the point.
00:42:11What is the point?
00:42:12The point is, Patsy, is that I'm a chef and this is my restaurant and, you know, I need to be here.
00:42:18I can't be off doing something with someone else because then it just, you know, it leads to,
00:42:23well, I want to move away and I want you to pick my daughter up from school and I'm like,
00:42:27whoa, hey, I didn't sign up to take your daughter to school.
00:42:29Love her. She's great.
00:42:30But, you know, and, and then he wants to get married and move out to the suburbs and then suddenly sell your business.
00:42:35I don't want you to work anymore.
00:42:36What? What do you mean you don't want me to work anymore?
00:42:38This, this is my dream.
00:42:39You know that that was my dream.
00:42:40That's how we met.
00:42:41And, and his mother, mother, his mother doesn't like French food.
00:42:43Who doesn't like French food?
00:42:45Are you kidding me?
00:42:46Wow.
00:42:48Wow.
00:42:50Wow.
00:42:57Wow.
00:43:04Oh, man, you shouldn't have.
00:43:06Oh, Gil has the hots for the fancy French chef next door.
00:43:11You guys are idiots.
00:43:13Go kill.
00:43:14Go get him.
00:43:23Hey there.
00:43:27Oh, wow.
00:43:29Look at those.
00:43:30I got them for you.
00:43:33You shouldn't have. It's really...
00:43:36I also wanted to make sure you knew that I had a lot of fun yesterday and I would really love to do that again.
00:43:42Sometime.
00:43:43Yeah.
00:43:46I thought we were having a good time yesterday.
00:43:48Yes, we did.
00:43:50Maybe, maybe too good of a time, actually.
00:43:53Do, do I understand that?
00:43:55I just think that maybe I'm not the relationship kind of gal.
00:44:02Wait, are we in a relationship?
00:44:04No, no, no, I didn't mean that.
00:44:05I'm...
00:44:07This restaurant has been my dream for ten years and I'm trying really hard to make a success of it.
00:44:13But I, I just, I can't do that when I'm distracted.
00:44:19Okay.
00:44:20You know, we're still neighbors because we're right next to each other.
00:44:24We're neighbors, so I really hope that we can still be neighbor-ly.
00:44:30You bet.
00:44:32Good.
00:44:33So I'll just see you around.
00:44:34Okay.
00:44:35Yeah.
00:44:51Hey, Dad.
00:44:53Hey, kiddo.
00:45:03Those are beautiful.
00:45:05Those are from Gil, aren't they?
00:45:08So, did he ask you on an official date yet?
00:45:12Sarah?
00:45:14Yes, he did.
00:45:16I said no.
00:45:17Why on earth would you say no?
00:45:18You're clearly smitten with him.
00:45:19Yeah, so smitten I walk around with my head in the clouds all day.
00:45:23What?
00:45:25Pats, you said it yourself.
00:45:26You know, I'm just, I'm not here.
00:45:27I haven't been here.
00:45:28I forgot the fish.
00:45:29I've never done that before.
00:45:30First time ever.
00:45:31You know, and that's after only one almost kind of maybe date-ish, right?
00:45:36God forbid I should get any more distracted.
00:45:39Honey, there's nothing wrong with having your head in the clouds, okay?
00:45:42You don't always have to be in such control all the time.
00:45:44Yes, I do.
00:45:45I do, Patsy.
00:45:46This is my restaurant.
00:45:47This is my livelihood.
00:45:48It is mine to make a success.
00:45:49And it is my failure if I lose focus.
00:45:51And I'm better on my own.
00:45:55Really?
00:45:56Oh, Sarah, come on.
00:45:57I'm going to go and finish tidying up the dining room.
00:45:59You're good in here, right?
00:46:00You got it.
00:46:01Thank you, Patsy.
00:46:02I appreciate it.
00:46:11Taylor laughs so hard.
00:46:13And Taylor laughs so hard that root beer spurts out of her nose.
00:46:17Isn't that so funny?
00:46:18Yeah, that's funny, kiddo.
00:46:25And then we hijacked a police car and took a joyride down to Mexico.
00:46:28It was muy bieno.
00:46:30Sounds like fun.
00:46:38Dad, look, there's Sarah.
00:46:43Oh, hey, let's let her shop.
00:46:44Come on.
00:46:45I'm sure she wants to be alone.
00:46:46Sarah!
00:46:50Good morning.
00:46:51How are you?
00:46:52Good morning.
00:46:53Good morning.
00:46:54Did you mean it when you said I could come cook with you?
00:46:56Well, absolutely.
00:46:57Absolutely.
00:46:58Anytime.
00:46:59Thanks, Sarah.
00:47:00You're welcome.
00:47:03Hey, Dad, you know what?
00:47:04Can I go get some lemonade?
00:47:05Yes.
00:47:07Yes, you can.
00:47:08Oh, mercy.
00:47:11Au revoir, Sarah.
00:47:12Au revoir.
00:47:14A tout à l'heure.
00:47:15Thanks for that.
00:47:16Yeah.
00:47:17She likes hanging out with you.
00:47:18I guess it runs in the family.
00:47:22I'll see you around, Sarah.
00:47:35Paz, I think we're going to prep for quiche Lorraine today.
00:47:37Okay, sounds good.
00:47:38All right.
00:47:39Hey, Sarah.
00:47:40Hey, Hannah.
00:47:41Can I come cook with you?
00:47:42Uh, yeah.
00:47:43I think so.
00:47:44I think you can handle things for a little bit, right?
00:47:46Absolutely.
00:47:47All right.
00:47:48Let's do this.
00:47:49Thanks, Patsy.
00:47:50Awesome.
00:47:51Now, this is your basic cream sauce.
00:47:52It's called a béchamel.
00:47:53Béchamel?
00:47:54Béchamel.
00:47:55Très bien.
00:47:56Yes.
00:47:57Now I'm going to add the last heaping tablespoon of flour.
00:48:00Whisk that in there.
00:48:01Good job.
00:48:02It's going to get a little lumpy.
00:48:03That's fine.
00:48:04No worries.
00:48:05Butter will melt right in there.
00:48:06Excellent.
00:48:07Very nice.
00:48:08Very nice.
00:48:09Now the next step is to add some hot milk.
00:48:11Just a little bit at a time.
00:48:13Keep whisking.
00:48:14Good job.
00:48:15Beautiful.
00:48:16We'll add this sauce to our croque monsieur a little bit later.
00:48:21Crunchy mister?
00:48:22A crunchy mister.
00:48:23Yes.
00:48:24That's what it translates to, literally, yes.
00:48:27But honestly, all it really is is a fancy, fancy grilled cheese sandwich with ham.
00:48:33Okay.
00:48:34Croquette?
00:48:35No.
00:48:36Croque?
00:48:37Croque.
00:48:38Croque monsieur.
00:48:39Monsieur.
00:48:40Croque monsieur.
00:48:41Croque monsieur.
00:48:42Très bien.
00:48:43Very good.
00:48:44Crunchy mister's way funnier.
00:48:45It's way funnier.
00:48:46Oh my goodness.
00:48:47Does that look right?
00:48:48Yeah.
00:48:49No, that looks great.
00:48:50A little pasty, like my complexion, since I'm kind of missing out on summer these days.
00:48:54Hey, how's your summer vacation?
00:48:55Oh, it's good.
00:48:56Yeah?
00:48:57I got sunburned last week while horseback riding.
00:48:58You did?
00:48:59I'm so sorry.
00:49:00Horseback riding?
00:49:01I love horses.
00:49:02That's a lot of fun.
00:49:04We should go on your day off.
00:49:07What?
00:49:08Oh, that would be fun.
00:49:09Absolutely.
00:49:10I'm not so sure your dad would like that.
00:49:11No, he'd be fine with it.
00:49:12It's pretty cool.
00:49:13It can be like a girl's day.
00:49:14A girl's day.
00:49:15I like that.
00:49:16Sounds like a plan.
00:49:17So, you've invited Sarah to ride with us, too?
00:49:42Yes.
00:49:43Staying?
00:49:44Yes.
00:49:45Are you going to stay?
00:49:46Well yeah, I just thought it'd be fun if we all went out.
00:49:49Oh, fun.
00:49:53Want me to leave?
00:49:54It's not, not if you don't want to, that's, you know.
00:49:59Shall we?
00:50:02Sure.
00:50:08Okay.
00:50:10This will be my horse.
00:50:12Here we go.
00:50:13Is that your team horse, Dad?
00:50:15I got him.
00:50:16He chose me.
00:50:19Do you like the horse, Sarah?
00:50:21Uh, yeah.
00:50:22Beautiful.
00:50:23Okay.
00:50:24Ready?
00:50:25Make a left.
00:50:27Drive.
00:50:31Hey, Anna, slow down.
00:50:32Okay.
00:50:34Soon to be interfering with girls' day.
00:50:36I'm sorry about that.
00:50:38It's quite alright.
00:50:40I'm sure you didn't have much of a choice in it.
00:50:42She's very persistent, that Anna.
00:50:44Yeah, but I like that about her.
00:50:45She'll be able to take care of herself while she grows up.
00:50:51Anna!
00:50:52Let's race!
00:50:53Okay!
00:51:10Pull back on the reins.
00:51:11Pull down on the reins.
00:51:12That's it.
00:51:15Come on.
00:51:17You can eat later.
00:51:18I'll feed you later.
00:51:20Good boy.
00:51:22Good boy.
00:51:28Oh, shoot.
00:51:32Morning.
00:51:33Morning.
00:51:35Give you a hand, but, uh...
00:51:36No, no.
00:51:37It's fine.
00:51:39Oh, are you kidding me?
00:51:45Morning.
00:51:46Hello, everyone.
00:51:47All right, I'm sorry.
00:51:48Here, I got it.
00:51:51Let's see.
00:51:52I got it.
00:51:53There you go.
00:51:54Oh, I got it.
00:51:55No, I'm sorry.
00:51:56You got it?
00:51:57Yeah.
00:51:58Okay, thanks.
00:52:02Sarah!
00:52:03Hey, there.
00:52:04Hey.
00:52:05Look what Dad bought me.
00:52:06All right.
00:52:07Let's see what he got you here.
00:52:08Got some bread, some Gruyere cheese, some ham and mustard.
00:52:11Let's see.
00:52:12You making crunchy misters?
00:52:13Yes, I am.
00:52:14Dad said I could cook for him on this day off.
00:52:17Yeah, I do all the cooking.
00:52:18Let her pick up some of the slack around the house.
00:52:20You know what I mean?
00:52:22You should come, Sarah.
00:52:23Oh, you know, that would be really lovely.
00:52:25You taught me how to make it, so you have to come.
00:52:28It's fine, right, Dad?
00:52:29Well, Sarah's always welcome.
00:52:30I just assume she has other plans.
00:52:33I would love to come.
00:52:35As long as I can bring the dessert.
00:52:37Of course.
00:52:38I'll see you at 7.30.
00:52:407.30 it is?
00:52:42Thanks so much.
00:52:43Any time.
00:53:05Hi.
00:53:07Hi.
00:53:09Uh, so how's our petite chef doing?
00:53:11She's hard at work.
00:53:13Uh, and taking it very seriously.
00:53:14Come in.
00:53:15She lit the candles.
00:53:17Did she?
00:53:30May I present
00:53:31Hannah Callahan's crunchy misters.
00:53:35Beautiful.
00:53:37It's extra creamy.
00:53:38Look at that beautiful cheese.
00:53:39Oh, it smells so good.
00:53:43They look delicious, honey.
00:53:49And what?
00:53:50Oh.
00:53:52They're so good.
00:53:53I could really get used to this, kiddo.
00:53:55Is it, like, really good or is it just good for a kid?
00:53:58What's kid good?
00:53:59You know, it's good for a kid, but not an adult.
00:54:01Or you say it is, but it's not that good
00:54:02because you don't want to hurt my feelings.
00:54:04Well, personally, I think that it's grown-up delicious.
00:54:06But what do I know?
00:54:07I'm just your dumb old dad.
00:54:08Why don't we ask an expert, Sarah?
00:54:13Well, that's not fair.
00:54:14I don't know what she said.
00:54:16She said,
00:54:17Miss Callahan,
00:54:20dinner is delicious.
00:54:23The most important lesson for a chef to learn
00:54:26is
00:54:28to eat her own food before it gets cold.
00:54:30Okay.
00:54:32What is it?
00:54:33This is some sort of cream.
00:54:35It's like a...
00:54:36Béchamel.
00:54:37Béchamel!
00:54:39Très bien.
00:54:46Okay, I'm going to go do the dishes.
00:54:48Absolutely not.
00:54:49You cook, I clean.
00:54:50Those are the rules.
00:54:51No.
00:54:52You don't make me do all the dishes when you cook.
00:54:53Well, I can certainly help do the dishes.
00:54:54Let's all do them together.
00:54:55You're going to teach me how to make bread tomorrow.
00:54:56I am?
00:54:57Yes.
00:54:58Oh.
00:54:59Okay, I'm going to do the dishes.
00:55:00No arguments.
00:55:01By all means.
00:55:04Merci, Mademoiselle.
00:55:08She really is a lovely young lady.
00:55:12You're welcome.
00:55:13I worry that she's growing up too fast.
00:55:17She feels she has to take care of me now that her mom's gone.
00:55:21Thank you for coming.
00:55:23By the way,
00:55:24it meant a lot to her.
00:55:25And thanks for this.
00:55:26This was delicious.
00:55:27And it's a work of art.
00:55:28It's almost architectural.
00:55:30That would be French cuisine for you.
00:55:32Yeah, that's French cooking.
00:55:34Very specific.
00:55:35Very technical.
00:55:37Yes.
00:55:38Probably exactly the reason I was attracted to it.
00:55:39How so?
00:55:40When I was a kid,
00:55:41my parents and I used to go to this little place called Francoise.
00:55:45You know, the town that I grew up.
00:55:46We used to go every Sunday for breakfast.
00:55:48And when my parents passed,
00:55:50my grandparents had to sell their house.
00:55:52And so,
00:55:54no more.
00:55:55And I would just go back every once in a while.
00:55:57To just feel close to them.
00:55:59There.
00:56:01And one day, I found myself
00:56:04being hired as a waitress there,
00:56:06which was really nice.
00:56:07And a few months after that,
00:56:09a line cook got sick and they asked me to help out,
00:56:11which was even better.
00:56:14And for the first time since my parents died,
00:56:21I felt like I was home again.
00:56:24In that kitchen.
00:56:29You're an excellent cook.
00:56:32I mean, I threw Italian,
00:56:34Japanese,
00:56:35Greek food at you.
00:56:36You'd have thought you were trained in all those cuisines too.
00:56:39Have you ever thought of,
00:56:41I don't know,
00:56:42straying from such traditional French dishes?
00:56:45Well, French food is definitely that.
00:56:47It's very precise, very exacting, very detailed.
00:56:49But at least I know that there's a right way and a wrong way to do things.
00:56:52And I find it very comforting,
00:56:54because the rest of the universe
00:56:56does not exactly follow those rules all the time, does it?
00:56:59When Kate died, it was just so ridiculous.
00:57:01I'm a firefighter.
00:57:02I go to work every day.
00:57:03I know I'm putting my life on the line.
00:57:06But the whole idea that she was at home,
00:57:09that she was in danger.
00:57:12Oh!
00:57:14What?
00:57:15I'm sorry.
00:57:16Oh!
00:57:18What?
00:57:20I'm sorry.
00:57:22Are you okay over there? Bubbles?
00:57:24Sorry.
00:57:25I'll just stay here.
00:57:31You sure you don't need help?
00:57:33All good.
00:57:34She's very stubborn.
00:57:36Where does she get that from?
00:57:41Tonight was fun when Sarah came by, wasn't it, Dad?
00:57:44Sure.
00:57:47She's pretty.
00:57:50Don't you think she's pretty?
00:57:52What's up, kiddo?
00:57:54Before Mom died,
00:57:57she said that one day you'd meet someone really nice.
00:58:01You might even want to get married again.
00:58:02Anna.
00:58:03She said that you might feel like you're a cheat on her,
00:58:05even though she's not here anymore,
00:58:07and that I'd help you move on.
00:58:12Listen,
00:58:13I know
00:58:14that you like Sarah,
00:58:17but are you really ready for me to date?
00:58:22Yeah.
00:58:27I mean, I think so.
00:58:33Mom was right. You shouldn't have to be alone.
00:58:36You know what?
00:58:39You're just like her.
00:58:40I am?
00:58:41Yeah.
00:58:43I can't hear her anymore.
00:58:45What?
00:58:46Mom's voice.
00:58:49I used to hear her in my head,
00:58:54telling me that she loved me,
00:58:59to do my homework,
00:59:04brush my hair.
00:59:09Now it's all gone.
00:59:13That's what happens to everyone who loses somebody they love.
00:59:16Kiddo, that's just your mind's way of protecting you,
00:59:22making you forget a little bit so that your heart doesn't keep breaking.
00:59:36I love you.
00:59:39I love you.
00:59:43Patsy?
00:59:44So, is the front of the house good to go?
00:59:46Yeah, of course.
00:59:48Oh, um...
00:59:50Let me show you now.
01:00:00You know, second chances don't come around that often.
01:00:13I love you.
01:00:25Hi.
01:00:26Hey, come on in.
01:00:29I, uh, I know that you're busy, um,
01:00:32but I just, uh, wanted to say thank you very much for the flowers.
01:00:36Thought I'd try again.
01:00:38Sarah, I know you said no when I asked you out,
01:00:41but I was really hoping you'd reconsider.
01:00:44I just feel like you and I...
01:00:48I just feel like... Really?
01:00:52I gotta take this, sir.
01:00:54Yeah, Danny.
01:00:56Hey, buddy. Listen, uh,
01:00:58Hannah just got a little bump on her head.
01:01:00What?
01:01:01Yeah, she was, uh, jumping on the trampoline
01:01:03and her foot got caught in the springs.
01:01:05I'll be right there.
01:01:07No, no, no, no. Listen, listen.
01:01:08I already checked her out, and I think she's fine, okay?
01:01:10Oh, yeah. Dad, I'm totally fine.
01:01:12Don't worry about me. I'll see you at home.
01:01:13See? She's fine, all right?
01:01:15Now, I'm just following protocol for a head injury.
01:01:17We're over at the ER right now.
01:01:18Why don't you just go ahead and sit tight,
01:01:20and we'll give you a call.
01:01:25Hannah's been hurt. I better go.
01:01:27Can I help?
01:01:28Don't worry. She'll be okay.
01:01:29Call the chief.
01:01:37Hannah's gonna be fine.
01:01:39Yeah, I hope so.
01:01:43You okay?
01:01:45What are you gonna say to go when he gets back?
01:01:48I think you should just, I don't know,
01:01:50go over there and say thank you and...
01:01:54What?
01:01:56Do you smell something?
01:02:02What is going on? It smells like smoke.
01:02:04What?
01:02:08What? Oh, my, what happened?
01:02:10I'm just an investor here.
01:02:12I'm not even supposed to cook.
01:02:13I told Gil I couldn't.
01:02:15Then why are you cooking?
01:02:17That's what you can call it.
01:02:18Mike is on duty at the firehouse,
01:02:20and Danny and Gil are both with Hannah at the hospital.
01:02:23And frankly, I should join them,
01:02:25because they're gonna give me a pounding
01:02:26when they find out what I did to their kitchen.
01:02:28There's nothing left to serve.
01:02:30It's all covered in flame retardant.
01:02:32Yes, it is.
01:02:34You did a good job
01:02:35with that thing.
01:02:37Fires. You fight fires.
01:02:44How did you get a hamburger
01:02:48up there?
01:02:50Honest to God, I don't know.
01:02:56Was something wrong next door?
01:02:58Well, the fire chief nearly burned the place down,
01:03:00if you can believe that irony.
01:03:01He has customers and no food.
01:03:03And from the looks of things here,
01:03:06Beth could actually handle the dinner service.
01:03:10Would you come and help me run Gil's kitchen?
01:03:12Hannah's hurt, and the last thing he needs
01:03:14is to lose business and come back to a mess.
01:03:17Of course I will.
01:03:21Thanks.
01:03:22Dad, I'm fine.
01:03:25Dad?
01:03:26Okay, thank you.
01:03:27Can you help me down, please?
01:03:29Dad?
01:03:31Dad, stop!
01:03:33No!
01:03:35I'm fine.
01:03:37You heard the doctor. Go back to work.
01:03:40It's not gonna happen. I'm in for the night.
01:03:42Dad, you left the chief in charge.
01:03:45You think you're the one with the head injury?
01:03:47It's the worst that can happen.
01:03:49Listen, kiddo,
01:03:51I know that this restaurant has taken over our lives
01:03:53this summer, but I don't ever want you to forget
01:03:55you're my number one priority.
01:03:58And a chip.
01:04:00My favorite.
01:04:02How's that feel?
01:04:04Really, Dad?
01:04:05You have a nasty bump there. You gotta ice it.
01:04:07Are you done?
01:04:16Love you.
01:04:17Love you.
01:04:20Save me some of that.
01:04:21Mm-mm.
01:04:22Okay.
01:04:24Bye.
01:04:25Come on.
01:04:27How's...
01:04:29What's that?
01:04:30It's a baby bite.
01:04:31I know.
01:04:35Oh, man.
01:04:37One beef stew and one crack egg.
01:04:39Stew's a big success.
01:04:41I'll see you now.
01:04:42Great.
01:04:43See you.
01:04:44Bye.
01:04:46Bye.
01:04:47See you.
01:04:48Bye.
01:04:50See you.
01:04:52Bye.
01:04:53Okay.
01:04:54Bye.
01:04:55Bye.
01:04:56Bye.
01:04:57Bye.
01:04:58Bye.
01:04:59Bye.
01:05:00Bye.
01:05:01Bye.
01:05:03Bye.
01:05:04Bye.
01:05:05Gret.
01:05:08Well, the chief said that the beef stew was a big success.
01:05:10Come on, what's that idiot now? He almost burned the place down.
01:05:13I'll see.
01:05:14But you know what?
01:05:14He is kind of cute in that big, burly, kinda, rurl way.
01:05:18That fireman or ...
01:05:20God, I love firemen.
01:05:21They're just ...
01:05:23Pass the gear back to work, is that what you're thinking?
01:05:25Yeah.
01:05:25Yeah, right.
01:05:27But they are ...
01:05:28It's just unbelievable.
01:05:29Have you ...
01:05:30I'll see.
01:05:30Okay.
01:05:31There really is extraordinary EMTs, firemen, cops, not so much, but oh, I love... I'm talking to myself.
01:05:46Yes, I... I believe this is the place.
01:05:51Chez Varenne. Get a couple of those beauty shots, shall we?
01:05:56That stew was amazing.
01:05:58Oh, everything was amazing.
01:06:02Aha.
01:06:04Well, uh, shall we?
01:06:12Let's give it a whirl.
01:06:14Yeah.
01:06:30Hey. Hey, Chief. Come on in.
01:06:32Thanks. How you doing?
01:06:35Oh, Hannah's out. I don't want to wake her.
01:06:38I just came by to tell you everything went really smoothly.
01:06:41It did?
01:06:42No, it didn't.
01:06:44What happened?
01:06:45I almost destroyed the place. Almost burned it down.
01:06:49But your cute neighbor came by and took charge.
01:06:52Sarah? That cute neighbor?
01:06:55Sarah. That'd be the one.
01:07:07You may have to ask him out this time.
01:07:10Get back to work.
01:07:14I'm sorry.
01:07:15I'm sorry.
01:07:16I'm sorry.
01:07:17I'm sorry.
01:07:18I'm sorry.
01:07:19I'm sorry.
01:07:20I'm sorry.
01:07:21I'm sorry.
01:07:22I'm sorry.
01:07:23I'm sorry.
01:07:24I'm sorry.
01:07:25I'm sorry.
01:07:26I'm sorry.
01:07:27I'm sorry.
01:07:28I'm sorry.
01:07:29I'm sorry.
01:07:30I'm sorry.
01:07:31I'm sorry.
01:07:32I'm sorry.
01:07:33I'm sorry.
01:07:34I'm sorry.
01:07:35I'm sorry.
01:07:36I'm sorry.
01:07:37I'm sorry.
01:07:38I'm sorry.
01:07:39I'm sorry.
01:07:40I'm sorry.
01:07:41I'm sorry.
01:07:42I'm sorry.
01:07:43Now I know that
01:07:45Love can grow
01:07:47A little breeze
01:07:49That blows and blows
01:07:51Now everything's
01:07:53Illuminated
01:07:55See colors that
01:07:57Once were faded
01:08:00I know what
01:08:02I must do
01:08:04Even when
01:08:06Skies are blue
01:08:07Oh
01:08:32Hi, hi
01:08:34Uh
01:08:36It's like I owe you another thank you and that last night was the second time swooped in and saved the five alarm grill
01:08:42It's no problem. Really. It's just happy to help and actually I was really hoping we could
01:08:48Maybe finish the conversation that
01:08:52We had started earlier
01:08:54I'd like that
01:09:04The restaurant thing is is is is on the news. Oh my god scared me. I thought that something was on fire
01:09:10You've gotten me so worked up that it could be us one night that I got a little overexcited
01:09:15And now Redmond Roads has the place to eat this weekend. Thank you, Nora
01:09:21Well this week's recommendation brought us to Vista Grande, but here's the thing Nora. There's a little twist in this tale
01:09:27You see there's a delightful charming little French restaurant that called Chez again the owner and chef
01:09:35Some time now to come down there and try a meal
01:09:38Well the other evening while we had every intention of eating at shave our end
01:09:42I couldn't help but notice a new addition to the neighborhood just next door
01:09:45In fact, it was a high-energy home cooking establishment called the five alarm grill
01:09:51It's run entirely by firefighters from local station for who serve up traditional and delicious rib-sticking dinners
01:09:58Here's the thing or us civilians don't have to slide down a pole to get them or go into a burning building
01:10:03I hope no way no way and that's why the Redmond Roads restaurant recommendation this Friday is the five alarm grill
01:10:11Don't forget to try the macaroni cheese and delicious beef stew
01:10:15Sounds like they're putting hunger fires out. Huh Redmond. I can't believe this. I'm so sorry
01:10:31I'm done
01:10:34And done with what the all of it though Sarah, you don't mean that I do
01:10:46I'm gonna be a chef half my life and as a goal that I've strived for and I did a good job
01:10:56I'm classically trained. I have traveled the world
01:11:00I've
01:11:01Built this restaurant to something that I could be proud of and I was so sure that
01:11:07One day I was gonna be a success
01:11:10And then you shut up
01:11:12You put a restaurant on a on a on a whim
01:11:16Did you know that nine out of ten new restaurants fail? But no, no, no, you're an overnight success
01:11:22While I struggle on a daily basis, it's almost
01:11:27the perfect ending
01:11:29Me cooking at your restaurant on the night of your rave review
01:11:33It's like driving the final nail into the coffin of my restaurant. Come on. Don't say that
01:11:38Why not cuz your restaurant is gonna be an even bigger success tomorrow and mine is just gonna be the
01:11:46City, I'm gonna go close the doors right now
01:11:50Sarah
01:11:57You know, I'm sorry she's uh
01:12:00She's a passionate woman. Sometimes a little too passionate. It's just that uh this
01:12:06This restaurant. It's all she's had. It's all she's wanted actually and
01:12:11Does she met you?
01:12:20Oh
01:12:29Sarah
01:12:31Whatever you're gonna say Patsy, please. Do not interject the phrase handsome firefighter. Yes
01:12:37Would you prefer?
01:12:41Crybaby woe is me
01:12:43Melodramatic chef who overreacts and throws an incredible man under the bus doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?
01:12:52You have to know this wasn't Gil's fault
01:12:55There's more to life than cooking Sarah. You can't keep pushing people away
01:13:00Cuz sometimes they won't come back
01:13:02I
01:13:11Didn't even know where Gil went
01:13:22He's not answering he's going straight to voicemail
01:13:32I
01:13:39Need to get to the new studio, it's important
01:13:46So on a scale from 1 to 10, how badly do you think I messed things up with Gil?
01:13:51Why does it only have to go up to 10?
01:13:57Hey
01:13:59Hi, um, do you maybe know where my dad went? Okay in three
01:14:04Two, thanks coach Cassidy for that KXP sports report. And now it seems we have a visitor. Yeah, hey
01:14:12That's right, Nora. We do indeed have a visitor with us
01:14:16He's on television now viewers
01:14:18If you are watching the Redmond Roads restaurant review earlier in the broadcast, you would have heard me mention the five alarm grill
01:14:24Well Gil Callahan the owner and chef at the five alarm grill is here in the studio with us this evening
01:14:31And he has something rather interesting to say good evening Gil. Good evening. Thank you Redmond. Hi, Nora
01:14:39Well, here's the irony
01:14:41You came to our little street to try Sarah Westbrook's cooking, but that's exactly what you did
01:14:47You just did it at the five alarm my restaurant
01:14:49You see, um, my daughter had been hurt and I had to step out and
01:14:54Sarah came in at the last minute so that we didn't have to close down for the night
01:14:59So let me get this straight Gil Jack Westbrook left her restaurant to run the five alarm grill in your time of crisis
01:15:06That's right. She did. So she cooked the delicious beef stew
01:15:10I tasted she did Redmond
01:15:11And if you do review the chevron, you will try her beef bourguignon and that's a fancier even better version of that stew
01:15:17It's one of the many amazing things that Sarah has on her menu
01:15:22So, what do you say Redmond dinner chevron next week?
01:15:25Well, how could I refused I must tell you Gil
01:15:29I've reviewed a lot of restaurants in my time and I don't think I've ever come across anything quite like this before
01:15:34Well, she's well, she's my neighbor
01:15:38I'm just being neighborly
01:15:48What has been a very surprising KXP channel 17 news report
01:15:54And I'm Nora Smithson and from all of us here tonight. Have a good night
01:16:03That's a wrap people and we're clear and we're clear
01:16:18Oh
01:16:23Sarah
01:16:24Hi, hi
01:16:26Where is everybody? Oh, they went home at Danny and Elise took Hannah home with them
01:16:34Okay
01:16:37Hey
01:16:39I'm really sorry. Don't you dare apologize? I'm the one that should apologize
01:16:44You're a good man Gil Callahan Wow, thank you. You're welcome
01:16:51And that thing that you said on TV about us being neighborly
01:17:00I'm sorry. I don't I don't I can't do that
01:17:05It just wouldn't be enough
01:17:10Because I think I'm falling in love with you
01:17:15And
01:17:18You're clearly in love with me
01:17:22Or else you wouldn't have gone on TV and made such an incredible fool of yourself
01:17:32You're not gonna make this easy on me are you
01:17:41All right
01:17:44You
