00:00Exactly a year to the day when the most barbaric inhuman attack was visited on the Jews since
00:11the Holocaust.
00:12A day that is etched in infamy in the hearts and minds of the people in the House of David.
00:19Good Monday afternoon, I am William Theo.
00:21On the first year anniversary of the brutal Hamas attack on Israel that has left 1,200
00:28Israelis and foreigners dead, nearly 42,000 slain in Gaza and a Middle Eastern region
00:34on the knife's edge for a region-wide war as a result.
00:39But we begin here at home and the leader of a close ally paying a visit to the country
00:44and calling on the president who invited him earlier today.
00:47South Korean President Yun Suk-hyeol, First Lady and entourage arrived amidst clouds and
00:53rainy skies but was afforded full military honors as visiting head of a state in Malakanyang's
00:59Kalayaan Hall.
01:01The South Korean leader came over to call on the president and rekindle friendly relations
01:07and renew bilateral relations.
01:09After formal arrival honors and reception protocols, the two leaders began bilateral
01:15talks at the state dining hall after which they presided over the presentation of newly
01:20inked deals and a joint press conference for media documentation.
01:25The memoranda of understanding the two inked include strategic initiatives to heighten
01:30cooperation on areas such as maritime security, energy, tourism, infrastructure and people-to-people
01:38ties among others.
01:40President Yun Suk-hyeol's visit is upon the invite extended by President Ferdinand R.
01:46Marcos Jr. and comes 13 years after the last stand-alone bilateral visit from a South Korean
01:53head of state.
01:54Likewise, his visit with his First Lady Kim Hyon Hui and delegation marks an auspicious
02:00occasion, the diamond or 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations established between
02:06both countries.
02:08South Korea holds the Philippines in high esteem for coming to its aid in 1950 when
02:13the Philippine government dispatched thousands of troops to help South Korea thwart an invasion
02:19from the North in the Korean War.
02:23Meanwhile, Israel marked today's sad anniversary with melancholy and grief amidst the backdrop
02:31of raging war not only with Hamas in Gaza but with Hezbollah to the north in Lebanon
02:37and hundreds of miles east to its arch-nemesis Iran.
02:41In fact, earlier today, Israel launched a twin airstrike in Gaza and Beirut as it pressed
02:47on its superior military capabilities against Hamas and Hezbollah, pounding Gaza even more
02:53to rubble and sowing destruction and death in the Lebanese capital.
02:59But in the Holy Land, protesters and supporters of the families and kin who still grieve and
03:04lament about their loved ones still in Hamas captivity pressed on their mass gatherings
03:10and peaceful rallies picketing in front of Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu's home to pressure
03:15him to a ceasefire deal and a complete hostage release.
03:20But while Israel and its supporters marked today's tragic anniversary with melancholy
03:24and grief, strangely enough, there are a lot more rallies and protest actions all over
03:30the planet in support of an end to Israel's war in Gaza and the killing of thousands of
03:35innocent women and children, who comprise more than two-thirds of the 42,000 deaths
03:40in Gaza thus far.
03:45Savage attack on Israel by Hamas terrorist fighters has sparked a war that has led to
03:50nearly 42,000 dead Hamas fighters and even more innocent Palestinian women and children.
03:56Even more, the war has been the deadliest to the press, covering it, nearly all of the
04:01116 press people killed Palestinians.
04:04VOA has this special report.
04:09The October 7 Hamas assault killed 1,200 in Israel.
04:14Terrorists kidnapped 251 people.
04:17The attack ignited a war that continues to this day.
04:22Among the mounting number of civilian deaths are dozens of journalists.
04:27More journalists were killed in the first 10 weeks of the war than have ever been killed
04:32in a single country over the course of an entire year.
04:35According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, the death toll as of October 1st is 111 Palestinians,
04:42two Israelis and three Lebanese journalists.
04:46There is also very great challenges in terms of access to the story for journalists.
04:58And the story is, in my experience, the most polarizing story we've ever had to deal with
05:05in my long career as a journalist.
05:08Tarek Hajaj is a Gaza correspondent for Mondewiz, an online publication covering the Palestinian
05:14territories, Israel and U.S. policy.
05:18He has lived his entire life in Gaza City.
05:21And every time I was walking under the Israeli drones and warplanes, I was feeling that every
05:29second they may bomb me, specifically me, because I know they target journalists and
05:35I know they don't want anything from Gaza to get out to the people.
05:41Considered as a progressive news site, Mondewiz has faced criticism for what some say are
05:47anti-Israeli views.
05:49The Israeli government has denied on multiple occasions that it targets journalists.
05:54But CPJ and others say the Israel Defense Forces should be accountable for the high
05:59media death toll.
06:01Nearly all those who died are Palestinian.
06:04They're also the only people able to report from Gaza because no foreign journalists have
06:09been allowed in.
06:11So they bear the full weight of responsibility of reporting on the impact of the war on Gaza.
06:19Injury and death are not the only risks journalists face.
06:24Some of the dangers are not just physical dangers, but there's cyber stalking and harassment
06:32and intimidation of journalists.
06:35The United Nations had condemned the attacks on journalists, indicating that they were
06:40disturbing reports of attacks against media workers despite being clearly identified.
06:46In response to a UN report, the IDF said it does not deliberately shoot at civilians,
06:52including journalists.
06:54Hajaj remembers every story he has covered since October 7, some, he says, were devastating
07:00to write.
07:01But he knows it's his job to keep reporting on what is happening.
07:06With Liam Scott, Cristina Caicedo-Smith, VOA News.
07:10And that is a wrap for this afternoon's program.
07:16Join us anew later on for the evening news break edition.
07:19Stay connected by keeping it here for news you can count on.
07:22I am William Theo, and thank you for watching PTV News Now.
