00:00So when Notre Dame returns home last week for the home opener in
00:06year three under Marcus Freeman under the watchful eye of
00:09touchdown Jesus against Northern Illinois as a four
00:12touchdown favorite, it's supposed to be easy going. It
00:16was not. Northern Illinois's first ever win against an AP
00:21top ten team. The largest upset from the spread perspective we
00:24had seen since the 2021 college football season and Kevin Walsh
00:28I do feel sorry to start with you, but we do go to your
00:32opinion on the fighting Irish. A difficult game last week, a
00:36large upset in South Bend to the hands of NIU. Another in
00:41state game for Notre Dame this week in a rivalry. The 88th
00:46all-time matchup as they travel to West Lafayette to take on
00:50Purdue. This line working against the Irish. It was near
00:53double digits earlier in the week. Now just a seven and a
00:56half point spread. What resolve do you think we see
00:59today out of Marcus Freeman's club? Who cares? I mean, obviously
01:02who cares? What a joke. What an embarrassment. You know, people
01:06probably figured they're going to get a certain taker. You
01:09know, I'm sorry to start with me, right? My Notre Dame
01:11Allegiance. Most unbiased man in the history of sports media.
01:14Three people here, two of them picked this team to make the
01:16playoff and then there was me because I don't trust this
01:18team. I don't trust the schedule. Everybody said and
01:21here's the thing. This game today, you can see it on the
01:23line. It's a dangerous spot. These are the kind of games
01:25that I was supposed that I was worried about with this team
01:27and they might lose this game today and if they do, Marcus
01:29Freeman does not deserve another game but Marcus Freeman
01:31doesn't deserve another season. They would have been better
01:33off if they lost to Texas A&M and beat Northern Illinois.
01:35Their season is likely done. They will have to run the table
01:38and will still be potentially left on the cutting room floor
01:42of making the college football play. Look at the movement.
01:45Minus 410 to make the CFP. They're now three to one and
01:48again, that three to one does jump off the page as a bit
01:50generous and that is to me ultimately the biggest thing.
01:53They're playing Purdue and my honest breakdown aside from
01:57loving under 47 and a half is who cares? They win this game
02:00and it keeps them ranked, okay? And if they lose this game,
02:04they should very much so fire Marcus Freeman. That's not an
02:06overreaction. You cannot, you cannot lose in South Bend to
02:13Northern Illinois laying four scores. You can't lose to
02:17Marshall in South Bend laying three scores. You can't lose to
02:21an atrocious Stanford team at home. You can't do it. You
02:26can't step up and beat Clemson and step up and beat USC and
02:30hand it back when you beat Louisville. You can't do it and
02:34that's what Marcus Freeman does. Big game gets everybody up.
02:38Season's over apparently. You know, now the season is
02:40actually over because you no show at home. There's no pride
02:44in that. These teams have fortresses. The best teams in
02:48college football. You don't go to Bryant Denny. You don't go
02:51to Death Valley. Whether that's LSD or Clemson, you don't go
02:54between the hedges and even dare think of pulling off an
02:57upset of that size. You don't dare. If you're Tennessee Tech,
03:01you got out of there, you didn't get shut out and it's
03:02the best night of your lives. Northern Illinois walks into
03:05that building and into the game, the head coach is telling
03:07Marcus Freeman, you want me to help you out and let me know
03:09what we saw and Freeman's like, yes, please. Here's what the
03:12kids should really do. He should go over and tell Freeman,
03:14get on my staff next year. You'll be lucky if I make you a
03:16DC and a Mac. Garbage. Fresh. I like under 47 and a half. Love
03:22under 47 and a half. I'll just say this. You're right. You're
03:25okay and I know he's frustrated. That was beautiful
03:28though. That was good. It was eloquent. It was gorgeous. Great
03:31breakdown. He's right. They can't, they can't lose a game
03:35outright as a 28 and a half point favorite to Northern
03:39Illinois. First Mac loss in the history of Notre Dame. That was
03:43a garbage loss and more importantly, quarterbacks. You
03:46get Sam Hartman last year. You got Riley Leonard this year.
03:49Upgrades from what Brian Kelly had taken those teams to the
03:52college football playoff and you limp in regards to the
03:55passing attack. Can't happen today. I do like Riley Leonard
03:59and his team to bounce back in a little bit of a way. The
04:01reason why Ben is because we talked about the the Purdue
04:05bye week. The fact that they were so consistent in regards
04:08to the passing attack. How can Hudson Card duplicate that?
04:112425. 96%. It's only going to go down and the fact that the
04:16bye week came after week one. Right. Is more of a detriment.
04:20This was better a bye week at the end of September. Not after
04:24one week. Now it's like a week one game again. So, Notre Dame's
04:27one eight straight. I think the game will be won in the
04:30trenches. It's going to be ugly maybe early on. They'll pull
04:33away. I do feel they cover. I do disagree with Kevin. I do
04:37feel it gets over the 47 and a half because of turnovers but
04:41we'll see how it plays out. The Shillelagh trophy. A Celtic
04:44club for war. That's what they play for today. It's actually
04:48the second Shillelagh trophy that Notre Dame plays for. The
04:52jeweled Shillelagh against Southern Cal. I found that
04:55interesting on this rivalry Saturday. Purdue has only
04:57played one game this year to Lee's point. Forty-nine zip
05:01over FCS foe Indiana State to start the season back in week
05:04one. Hudson card. Twenty-four of twenty-five. Two hundred and
05:08seventy-three yards and four touchdowns. The second most
05:13efficient passer in college football to this point. Only
05:16behind Ole Miss's Jackson Dart. But Purdue entered this year
05:19with the lowest win total in the Big Ten at four and a half.
05:23That was it for year number two under Ryan Walters who was the
05:26defensive coordinator for Illinois back in 2022 and the
05:30Illini had the best scoring defensive output in the
05:32country. Last year, the Boilermakers were the worst
05:35scoring defense in the Big Ten. You know the soldier boy meme
05:39on Breakfast Club? That guy stole my whole flow. Bar for
05:43bar. That's Purdue looking at Northern Illinois last week. The
05:46Huskies upsetting in AP top five team in Notre Dame. Purdue
05:51known as the Spoilermakers for their seventeen wins against AP
05:55top five opponents. Now Notre Dame eighteenth in the AP top
05:58twenty-five.
