00:26I'm Evan Maranofsky.
00:27That is Connor Ryan.
00:28Connor, what is up?
00:30Evan, I'm doing well.
00:32How are you doing?
00:33Doing great.
00:34Doing great.
00:35We're closer to hockey season, which is always a good thing.
00:37We are right there on the doorstep.
00:40And we have some new comments from different insiders around the NHL about Jeremy Swayman
00:47and the contract negotiations.
00:49And, you know, the whole realm of reporters are weighing in.
00:53Elliott Friedman, Darren Drager.
00:55And they've both reported some interesting things over the last couple days,
01:00at least since you and I have last spoke.
01:02And one thing was Elliott Friedman, I think it was over the weekend,
01:06mentioned that Jeremy Swayman might be looking for the Charlie McAvoy contract,
01:10or at least that was their initial asking price.
01:13And, again, that's $9.5 million per.
01:16Most recently, today, I believe, Darren Drager went on radio, I think in Toronto?
01:21Yes.
01:23And mentioned that I can't keep track of all the TSN radios and everything.
01:28I can't do it.
01:29I can't do it.
01:31But he went up there and said basically that they're actually a little bit closer
01:37than people think in terms of negotiations and where they're at.
01:41What do you make of sort of the latest with Swayman?
01:45I mean, I think in terms of the timeline, right,
01:48I kind of agree with what Drager mentioned.
01:51It's even something that I think Andrew Raycroft mentioned weeks ago,
01:54where even if you're at that point when you get to the summer
01:58and everyone's away, everyone's traveling,
02:01it can be tough at times to bridge the gap and make progress on these contract talks.
02:05But you get to this point of the year, it flips to September.
02:08You've got players coming back for training camp now.
02:12It does feel like things start picking up now.
02:15You've got people in the same building.
02:16Jeremy Swayman's at Warrior anyway right now,
02:19even though he's technically not under contract.
02:22I don't know if we can even talk to him right now
02:23because I don't know if he's actually under contract with the Bruins.
02:26But I do think when you get to this time of the year,
02:29even if let's say a few weeks ago they were still really far apart
02:33in terms of term, payout, anything like that.
02:37If Jeremy Swayman's looking for a McAvoy level deal
02:39and the Bruins are offering 6.75 or something like that,
02:45even if you have these contentious disagreements in terms of where the contract is,
02:50I do tend to agree with what Draeger's mentioning.
02:53It's something that has been mentioned many times before that
02:56once you get to this time of the year with training camp right around the corner,
03:00everyone in the same building,
03:02it's not like Jeremy Swayman's in the cafeteria part of the Bruins lounge
03:08and sees Don Sweeney with the tray just like,
03:12get away, get away, get away.
03:14I don't think that's happening in terms of where these kind of dynamics are
03:19and where these negotiations are right now.
03:22So yeah, I tend to agree more with what Draeger says.
03:25Again, I'm not fretting over the state of these contracts in terms of
03:30is this going to be an extended holdout or are we going to get into October
03:33and it's Corporasolo and Brendan Bussey because they can't get a deal done with Swayman.
03:38I'm not hitting the panic button there yet.
03:40But I do agree that once you get to this point of the calendar of the offseason,
03:45if you even want to call it the offseason at this point,
03:49it does feel like momentum gets picked up that even if maybe a few weeks ago
03:52these talks weren't where you wanted them to be,
03:56it's only natural these things really pick up once you get to this time of the year.
03:59Absolutely. And I think that's true.
04:02And I don't think there will be a holdout.
04:05I do think though, again, Friedman mentioning that the ask was the McAvoy contract.
04:10You and I have discussed this a bunch of times at this point,
04:14but 9.5, that's where I'm like, where's that coming from?
04:22And my guess is it's coming from,
04:25hey, you're hoping that he is a $9.5 million a year goaltender
04:30and it looks like he will be,
04:32but I get the Bruins end of it where it's like, well, he hasn't been so far.
04:36Like he's been a tandem goalie for the last three years
04:40and he had a nice two rounds in the playoffs this year.
04:43And again, it sounds like we're trashing him. We're not.
04:46But is he 9.5 million per?
04:49Like that's where I think like eight to me is where you sort of draw that line.
04:54It's like, all right, eight times eight, you can work with it.
04:58Eight times 9.5 for someone who, you know,
05:01does not have the credentials of a $9.5 million a year goalie.
05:05And we've mentioned some other goalies that are, you know, sort of in that ballpark.
05:09Like that's where it's like, that's a, I mean, good for him for asking.
05:14But if that's the ask, then I'm not surprised that we're, you know,
05:17that there hasn't been a deal done yet.
05:19Yeah. I mean, it does feel like, right, Evan,
05:21you look at where the up and down the rollercoaster that has been this negotiation.
05:27A lot of it's been through reports, leaks to the media, stuff like that.
05:32It does feel like when we talk about like the, whether it's a long-term deal,
05:36a bridge deal, is it 6.2 million? Is it 9.5? Is it 10 million? Right.
05:42It does feel like through all kind of the ups and downs of how this has gone so far.
05:47The easiest way to, you know, remedy this is like 8 million, you know,
05:51seven and a half, 8 million.
05:53And that seems like a good point where again,
05:55everyone gets paid some of it is banking off that potential, obviously,
05:58but it does seem like a way to get this guy locked in long term to a deal that
06:04should age pretty well over time if he lives up to the billing. Right.
06:09But again,
06:10maybe the Bruins still aren't comfortable with having him in that spot of that
06:14payout. Maybe they still want the bridge deal,
06:16which I still kind of disagree with in terms of I'd rather just sign him long term.
06:20I know there's more risk involved.
06:21Maybe if you're the Bruins,
06:22maybe they are anxious about they want to see more of him before handing him
06:26seven years, eight years or something like that.
06:29But I don't know.
06:30I think when you look at just the dynamics of this cap and the fact that just,
06:34you know, another year or two down the road,
06:36a guy that's, you know,
06:38giving you 25 goals a year, Tyler Trifoli,
06:42like in a few years down the road,
06:43a guy like Tyler Trifoli,
06:44who's a good player will give you 25,
06:4630 goals. And there's a lot of value to that.
06:48He's probably making like 10 million in a couple of years.
06:51Like the market's going to get pretty wacky in a couple of years.
06:54So I think it's important for a team like the Bruins.
06:57If you, if you think you have a guy that is a franchise fixture,
07:00maybe that is the holdup.
07:02But if that's a guy you think is worth investing in,
07:04I'd rather you lock him in longterm.
07:06Like look at like good Charlie McAvoy,
07:08which kind of reset the expectations on what these players are going to get
07:12paid. That deal is going to look pretty good in another couple of years or so.
07:15Even David Pasternak, who's a 60 goal scorer,
07:18making 11 and a half million looks steep right now.
07:21What's it going to be when the Trifoli's are getting 10,
07:2410 and a half million, right?
07:25You got Leon Dreisaiter making, you know, 14, 15.
07:28What about Austin Matthews when this bridge deal is up or Conor McDavid,
07:32right?
07:33Like I think if you have these guys that you think are going to be the
07:36foundations of your team moving forward,
07:38I think it's important to sign them up,
07:40sign them as long as possible,
07:42just because I think the market is going to get pretty wacky the next couple
07:45of years.
07:46It is. And that's also life. I mean,
07:48that's the life of the NHL contract structure.
07:51Like time goes by,
07:53cap goes up,
07:54deals look cheaper.
07:56Some look worse.
07:57That's the way it works.
07:58And I think, you know,
07:59credit to players for wanting to keep up with that and get paid market value.
08:02I I'm in agreement with that,
08:04but if you want a longterm deal,
08:06that's sort of what the trade off is like you,
08:09you know,
08:10you hope that that's around your market value in six,
08:13seven years,
08:14but it probably won't be,
08:15but that's okay.
08:16Cause you're making a lot of money and you have longterm stability in a
08:18place that you like.
08:19Now,
08:20the thing was swaying that I always come back to.
08:21And this is why I am open to an eight year,
08:23$8 million a year deal.
08:25Like if he was Yaroslav ask,
08:27ask her off with the sharks,
08:28right?
08:29You trade for this hot young goalie prospect and he,
08:31you know,
08:32does well in those first couple of years,
08:34you know,
08:35great goalie for sure.
08:37But you didn't develop him.
08:38You did not bring him up.
08:40Swayman was drafted here.
08:42He was developed obviously at Maine,
08:44but then came here,
08:45developed like this has been a Bruins guy for years.
08:49Now their handprints are all over him.
08:52And that to me is why I'm like,
08:54well,
08:55that's,
08:56you know,
08:57they know they've had him for a while.
08:58They have shaped him.
08:59They have formed him.
09:00You know,
09:01he had Alfie me showed in Maine who was a terrific goalie coach up
09:04there and assistant coach up there who works with the goalies.
09:07But like,
09:08to me,
09:09there's more in that than there is.
09:11Oh,
09:12they went and traded for this great hot goalie prospect,
09:14you know,
09:15right before he got to the show and he's worked out.
09:17But again,
09:18like that to me is why,
09:19like there is that added element of swimming where it's like,
09:22I think when we mentioned like franchise pillars right now,
09:25it's McAvoy and Pasternak,
09:27you know,
09:28longterm.
09:29And obviously of course you have guys like Zaka and Lindholm and,
09:32and,
09:33and Hampus Lindholm and,
09:34and,
09:35and so on and so forth.
09:36But the two pillars,
09:37the guys you have to the most money,
09:39McAvoy,
09:40Pasternak,
09:41we're almost there on Swayman.
09:42You like,
09:43you and I are all,
09:44we're like always like,
09:45well,
09:46and probably Swayman.
09:47It's like,
09:48we think it,
09:49it's just not like the McAvoy deal is where I'm like,
09:51huh?
09:52And so to me,
09:53like if,
09:54if the Swayman camp clearly does want that reportedly,
09:56that bridge deal would make sense for them in the sense that,
09:59hey,
10:00make,
10:01you know,
10:026.75,
10:037 million for four years and then get that,
10:05you know,
10:06$11 million,
10:07$12 million a year deal four years from now.
10:10Yeah,
10:11no,
10:12I know.
10:13Absolutely.
10:14And again,
10:15it's,
10:16you do run that risk,
10:17I guess,
10:18right?
10:19The Bruins don't want to be a team allocating all this money to a
10:20guy that maybe you still have question marks over,
10:21but I don't know,
10:22man.
10:23Like it does feel like every year Swayman has made steps forward
10:25that even if he's like,
10:27maybe you're worried that he's not going to be like a top three
10:31goalie.
10:32Like maybe he's not going to be in the same tier as a
10:34Shusterkin or something like that.
10:36But even if he's not like a Shusterkin or an Ottinger or one of
10:39these guys,
10:40or Hellebuck,
10:41what have you,
10:42that,
10:43you know,
10:44is like unquestioned,
10:45like an S-tier,
10:46maybe he's an A-tier goalie,
10:47which honestly,
10:48if you have an A-tier goalie and you look at how frigging tough
10:51it is to project,
10:52you know,
10:53which team ends up hoisting the cup,
10:54having an A-tier goalie that can be locked in and can get it
10:57hot at the right time.
10:58That's not inconceivable.
11:00These guys can get on a roll here,
11:01right?
11:02There's not like a Bennington situation or what,
11:05you know,
11:06Aiden Hill was like a few years ago,
11:08but how often is it that the Hellebuck or the Ottinger or one
11:12of these guys is the one that leads you to the promised land,
11:15right?
11:16Like,
11:17I think as long as you have a very good goalie that can play
11:19at a high level when needed,
11:20you have a chance.
11:21So maybe the Bruins do view him as a guy that we'd rather you
11:24keep around the,
11:26you know,
11:276 million,
11:287 million per year thing,
11:29moving forward,
11:30as opposed to giving him nine and a half.
11:34And again,
11:35maybe that's the market changes that kind of dictates what you
11:38have there.
11:39Maybe the Bruins want to see more from him before handing him
11:41a long-term deal.
11:42But I can kind of get the rationale of the Bruins and,
11:46you know,
11:47being,
11:48you know,
11:49not concerned,
11:50but wanting to see more from this guy who's only played,
11:52you know,
11:53what,
11:54what's his highest games play like 44 games.
11:56I think last year,
11:57I think that's around that.
11:58So it makes sense to want to see more maybe before they commit
12:01that much term.
12:02But again,
12:03I just think you look at the way the market's going.
12:06I think you'd rather be the team that has guys locked in moving
12:10forward as opposed to kind of playing how the market's going to
12:13change.
12:14Cause barring there being another calamity,
12:16Evan or another pandemic,
12:17the cap is going to be jumping up and imagine,
12:20you know,
12:21I imagine I can't foresee something else going catastrophically
12:24wrong,
12:25but I think the Bruins,
12:27yes,
12:28I think if you're the Bruins,
12:29you'd rather be a team that has your top assets,
12:32all locked in long-term as opposed to it's like playing the housing
12:36market.
12:37It's usually not smart to,
12:38to,
12:39to kind of roll the dice there.
12:40I think if you're the Bruins and you're dealing with cap space in
12:42a surging market,
12:43especially it's better to be risk averse than kind of rolling the
12:47dice.
12:48They're moving forward.
12:49We've said this with goalies so many times,
12:51cause there is this narrative of,
12:52Oh,
12:53you can put anybody in there and if they just get hot,
12:55you can make a run in the playoffs.
12:57And,
12:58you know,
12:59it doesn't matter who it is,
13:00Aiden Hill or Jordan Binnington or Anton,
13:02who Dobin,
13:03like it just,
13:04but that's so random.
13:05And when you have a good goalie,
13:07a hella buck,
13:08a swayman,
13:09a shisterkin,
13:10a Vasilevski,
13:11guys like that,
13:12the percentages of them having a hot run are so much higher.
13:16Like if you have those guys for five,
13:19six,
13:20seven,
13:21eight years,
13:22even there's a good chance.
13:23It's like,
13:24there's going to be maybe two,
13:25three runs,
13:26like long,
13:27good runs in there.
13:28It doesn't mean that,
13:29you know,
13:30I mean,
13:31swayman had a very good one this year.
13:32The scoring wasn't there.
13:33So it only went two rounds.
13:34Like,
13:35but you know,
13:36you see that with goalies and I think you have that.
13:37And that's why,
13:38like when you have a guy like swayman who has that potential,
13:40you keep around like,
13:41and you bet on that.
13:42And I think that that's a safe bet.
13:44Um,
13:45because again,
13:46like I just,
13:47you know,
13:48I hear it all the time of,
13:49Oh,
13:50they can put anybody in that.
13:51And you know,
13:52they could,
13:53but the percentages of swayman making a run right now are a little bit higher.
13:56And by a little bit,
13:57I mean a lot.
13:58So,
13:59um,
14:00yeah,
14:01I think the,
14:02the goaltending thing,
14:03and that's a whole nother can of worms.
14:04Um,
14:05it's almost like quarterbacking a bit.
14:06I mean,
14:07quarterbacking is more important,
14:08obviously,
14:09but I was going to say in the sense of like,
14:10if you have a good goalie,
14:11you at least know you're going to be competitive in it.
14:13If you don't,
14:14not as fun,
14:15not as fun.
14:16Uh,
14:17something that's always fun.
