Come with us on a walking tour to see the best street art and murals in Sheffield City Centre
Transcript
00:00There are impressive pieces of street art and murals all over Sheffield.
00:04Lots of them jump out at you but for others you have to know where to look.
00:07So join us for a tour of the art you can find in and around the city centre.
00:13Starting off at Carver Street is the impressive 25 metre tall Kingfisher mural from Peaches
00:18on the side of the Cubo building. Overlooking Pounds Park, the bright and bold piece was
00:22constructed in 10 consecutive days in May of this year. It's the tallest mural in the city centre.
00:29Just over the road is one of Pete McKee's works, Muriel, which appeared in 2018. It was hidden
00:35from view in 2021 by Building Works and reappeared two years later with a mystery splodge which is
00:40still there today. Perhaps the most iconic McKee artwork is just half a kilometre away on the side
00:46of Fagans Pub on Broad Lane. It first appeared over a decade ago but has been renovated this
00:51year to look slightly more colourful. The snog formed the basis of a project where hundreds of
00:55couples re-enacted the artwork in photos which were shown at a McKee exhibition last year.
01:00You'll find the oldest artwork on this list half a mile east of Fagans. The steel worker
01:04on Castle Street is based on a real steel worker but distorted slightly to account for the brick
01:09sizes. Paul Woplington was commissioned to create the mosaic by the council in the 1980s.
01:16A five minute walk south to Ponds Street will take you to another of Peaches' works
01:20which travellers can enjoy while waiting at the interchange. It was commissioned in July
01:242023 by Sheffield Hallam where the artist used to study. Just down the road and then up the hill
01:29at Howard Street takes you to the Now Then, Then Now mural by Rob Lee. He has included part of St
01:34Paul's Tower in the top of the mural so when you stand in the right position the art and the
01:38background seem to blend together. The eye-catching Joan of Arc mural on London Road was created by
01:43Elle Koziupa in 2023. She was just 20 years old when she designed and painted the artwork which
01:49she based on her sister. Elle told The Star how she used to draw on her bedroom walls when she
01:53was a child which she said would drive her mum mad. Perhaps too far out of the centre to be part
01:58of a walking tour but certainly still worth a mention is Fauna Graphic's Fox mural on the side
02:03of Mearsbrook Park Pavilion. The local community crowdfunded the artwork which appeared in 2021
02:08and is still there today. The website Sheffield Street Art has documented many of the dates of
02:12these artworks and regularly adds updates with new photos and artworks around Sheffield.
