Christopher McDonald Begged 'Happy Gilmore' Director To Let Him Try Memorable Final Putt from Movie

00:00No, I wasn't an avid golf player, but I did love the game.

00:03I started out with these blades.

00:06People don't know golf.

00:07That's very hard.

00:08It's like a dime-sized sweet spot.

00:10And I hated the game, so I couldn't hit it straight.

00:12And then I discovered, oh, you can get these hollowback ones.

00:14Oh, I see.

00:15Those are great.

00:16A little more forgiving.

00:17And then I played a lot more.

00:20When the first movie came out, I had been golfing every day, like six days a week, with

00:26a lot of good golfers out there, between setups, with the lights and all that stuff.

00:31And boy, my short game got crazy then.

00:34And I begged our director, Dennis Dugan, to let me make that final shot, even though it

00:41wasn't a putting green, of course.

00:43It was a botanical garden, because no one's going to let you drop a tower and bring in

00:47a BW there.

00:48Perfect.

00:49Right?

00:50But he gave me five tries.

00:51I think that was the fifth.

00:52I think that was the fifth, and that was a really crazy, ad-libbed response in the afterwards.

00:58It was very fun to do.

01:00And I threw my club up in the air, my putter up in the air, and went, God, as I did it,

01:03let go, and went, I hope I don't hit anybody.

01:06But most of the people were behind me.

01:09But I was pretty excited to put it on film.

01:12I'm a fan.

01:13I'm not that big a fan, because I'm a Buffalo Bills fan, and they happened to do a little

01:17damage to my team for a couple of years now, a little bit bitter, party of one, bitter.

01:22Anyway, not a party of one, but I love that these guys are coming out, everybody.

01:27And there's a line that they recently did something where they invited people to come

01:31out to try out for there being extras of 1,000 people down there.

01:35What?

01:36Wow.

01:37So you can tell people really love this movie, and I know it's going to be just delicious

01:43to do the second one, so I'm excited.

01:45I go to driving ranges and shoot until my hands turn to hamburger, and I say, that's

01:49enough for today.

01:50I go back and try to heal, and then I come back two days later.

01:53I do, I do, I got my short game down, but it's those drives, that's like, because Gilmore's

01:59so famous for that long, crazy swing that he has, and that's hard to match.

02:04So I just kind of leave that to him, and I'll do the short stuff for you.
