00:00All right, it was hot in Chicago yesterday. It's going to be even hotter there today.
00:05At Care, there's Emmy. Victor is live with us again,
00:07how millions of people can stay safe during this heat.
00:14Well, Ari, I'm here along Chicago's riverfront, which is usually packed with people this time
00:18of morning running or jogging. I can tell you I'm hardly seeing anyone out here.
00:21I think a lot of people have come to the realization that the best way to stay cool
00:25is simply by staying indoors. Now, because this kind of heat can be dangerous to you
00:30and your health, the city has designated over 250 public places as cooling centers,
00:36and these will help people seek relief from the heat. Officials are also reminding people
00:41to check on their relatives, especially those who live alone or do not have air conditioning.
00:46Prolonged exposure to the heat increases anyone's chances of falling ill,
00:50but especially younger children and older adults.
00:54If we know a heat wave is coming, I think the best thing you can do is prepare the person going
01:00and checking to make sure they have, you know, that their air conditioning is working,
01:04that they have, you know, fans or other things that will keep them cool.
01:10Now, to keep your indoor space cool, avoid using your oven and stove,
01:14close your curtains and turn off any non-essential lighting.
01:17But if you must spend time outside today,
01:20make sure to drink plenty of water and wear loose-fitting clothing.
01:23You can also visit a pool, a beach, a splash pad, a lake, wherever you can
01:27that can get you inside some water today. I think that's going to be incredibly helpful given
01:32how hot it is going to be today. I think a lot of those areas will be very packed. Back to you.
01:37Yeah, no problem. That's exactly right. And there shouldn't be any problem if you're
01:42going to those areas through at least the mid to late afternoon,
01:45then watch out for some storm flavor today. Emmy Victor,
01:48sweltering Chicago today, trying to stay as cool as she can.
