00:00Take me out for some hot dogs.
00:04All right.
00:06Looking for a late night bite?
00:10I got a place that might be right.
00:14Texas Tavern.
00:16Here in Rona.
00:18They only close on Christmas.
00:2024-7.
00:22Open all night.
00:24You can come here 4 o'clock in the morning
00:26if you want a hot dog.
00:28And they've been here since 1930.
00:30Now, they were founded by
00:32a traveling secretary
00:34from the circus.
00:36And he wanted to settle down.
00:38He wanted to stop traveling.
00:40So he started his own hot dog stand.
00:42Inspired by
00:44the hot dogs he found in Texas.
00:46And
00:48they've been here for
00:50over 90 years in Rona.
00:52And you know,
00:54they're also responsible for
00:56Texas Inn,
00:58which we reviewed last year in Lynchburg.
01:00And kind of an echo here.
01:02Echo, echo, echo.
01:04And, well,
01:06they are a timeless institution
01:08been owned by the same family
01:10for 90 years.
01:12Well, let's see
01:14just how these hot dogs rate
01:16as we go raw dogging at the Texas Tavern
01:18Rona.

01:50You know, they say the Texas Tavern
01:52is part of the Roanoke Millionaire's Club.
01:54You know, celebrities
01:56have come here, including Mike Pence,
01:58who got booed when he was here.
02:00But, uh,
02:02we'll see
02:04if these hot dogs are
02:06worthy of the tank.
02:08If they're really millionaires.
02:10And the first thing I notice is I don't like the color.
02:12The color isn't great.
02:14The bun
02:16feels kind of flat to me.
02:18Ordinary.
02:20But what does matter
02:22is the taste.
02:24Bun-to-dog ratio
02:26is adequate.
02:38You know,
02:42could probably cook a little bit more,
02:44but, you know,
02:46I would say this is an average hot dog.
02:49Lime-dry,
02:51single, right up the middle.
02:56Now for the chili dog,
02:58and their chili is what makes them famous.
03:00There's a lingo here.
03:02If you want a plain hot dog, you have to say
03:04a hot. And if you want one with chili,
03:06you have to say hot with.
03:08And years ago,
03:10if you didn't know the lingo,
03:12you wouldn't get served.
03:14They've settled down on that right now,
03:16I guess they kind of realized
03:18not everyone from Roanoke
03:20is going to know, but let's see it.
03:22Looks pretty good.
03:24Cheese melted quite nicely.
03:26Let's see how this
03:28actually tastes.
03:36That's a nice chili.
03:38Mmm.
03:44You know, the chili does make the dog
03:46in this case.
03:50This is good enough to be a double.
03:54You know, sometimes
03:56ambiance matters.
03:58Look at this place. This place is
04:02crawling with ambiance.
04:04You know,
04:06maybe the hot dogs may not be
04:08that special, but I think
04:10the ambiance
04:12makes it a point where it's a great place
04:14to try.
04:16And you know, it's a unique place.
04:18And they've been here for
04:2090 years. Let's hope they're here 90
04:22more years, as
04:24this is a fun place
04:26with average dogs.
04:28But, if you know any other
04:30places I should go, leave a comment down below.
04:32Email me. Just let me know.
04:34Because you never know where
04:36I'm going to show.
04:38See you down the road, and keep raw dogging.
04:42Take me out for some hot
04:44dogs.
04:46Get me one that's only plain.
04:48No mustard or
04:50horseradish.
04:52I'll know what the dog is
04:54really about, and it's
04:56hope that this is a good
04:58one. Maybe a
05:00home run or a double.
05:02But if it sucks, it will be
05:04a strike out and not
05:06worthy of my taste buds.
05:30you
