00:00The Department of Health is studying if vlogs should be banned following the death of a vlogger.
00:07We have with us DOH Spokesperson Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo. Good morning ASEC. This is Marice Cueto. Let's go live to the first news.
00:16Good morning Marice. Good morning to all the viewers and listeners.
00:21All right. ASEC, first of all, following the public health warning that you issued last Friday when I talked to you and the Secretary,
00:29is it a good chance to ban mukbang vlogs in the country? How is our investigation on the vlog of DONGs?
00:38Yes Marice. Our regulation is a spectrum. From the public health warning that we issued to the ban,
00:48but there are still many gaps in the middle. We need to know the reason why mukbang and bangsun, those two words,
00:57eating while broadcasting, that's why it's called mukbang in Korean. We need to look into the situation.
01:04Are there mental health conditions involved? What are the sibling effects to our eating, to the viewers and to the workers?
01:13So it's not a ban yet.
01:14All right. But there are many content creators online. How can we monitor them in case of emergency?
01:23That's another good point Marice. Remember you mentioned content. We don't want the public health to impinge on free speech.
01:31If it's necessary, we need to do it. But if we should not do it, there's another way, we go there.
01:38If it's not monitoring, it's difficult to do. What makes a particular broadcast mukbang, which is a threat to public health here that is established,
01:46or other things that can be expressed only. That's what we need to do so we won't be challenged by the court if we need to do a ban.
01:57What are the possible effects of mukbang on our body?
02:01Usually, if you video yourself, it looks like you're eating that much, but in reality, they're not consuming everything. What are the effects of this?
02:14Over the weekend, we watched the mukbang phenomenon. It looks like we need to study two aspects.
02:20First, we discussed with Secretary Erbosa on Friday, the dietary aspect.
02:25It's National Nutrition Month. We should be talking about Filipino dishes, go, grow and glow food.
02:32If it's all about grow, like fried chicken, it's all about grow. It's all meat and protein.
02:38It's not balanced. Then the dishes, it's not a dish, it's a basket. It's not right in portion size.
02:45The other aspect Marice is also, the reason why there are people watching our preliminary research this weekend,
02:53apparently, it has become popular because there are a lot of feelings of loneliness that seem to be resolved when they watch a mukbanger, a broadcaster,
03:02because you feel like you're eating. That's the participant aspect.
03:06All right. But how much should a person eat in a meal or in a whole day?
03:13Right. First of all, let's look at our standard plate. That's why it's called Pinoy plate, our plate.
03:22Typically, it's a plate that's enough. It can also be smaller, depending on our activity level or our size.
03:31Of course, the younger, the less, the older, the more active, the more. Let's not forget the balance.
03:37In mukbang, typically Marice, in mukbang, it's one kind of food only.
03:41The balance should include fruits and vegetables, almost half of the plate, and one-fourth of the carbohydrate.
03:50Let's go back, one-half of the carbohydrate, one-fourth of the vegetables and fruits, and the other one-fourth of the growth food, our proteins.
04:00That's what we should be eating.
04:02So shouldn't you take two when you're in preparation?
04:07Well, I take two. It's a matter of personal preference and also your body's signal.
04:15Our body has strong chemical and hormonal signals.
04:20When we're full, the term used by Secretary Arbosa, satiety, is a medical term that means you're full.
04:27When we feel full, typically it's enough.
04:32That's right. A content creator told me, I also talked to him last Friday in ASEC,
04:37that mukbang is not all bad, because there are viewers who are thankful to them
04:44because that kind of vlog can help them with their eating disorder.
04:48Those who don't feel like eating, when they watch it, they can eat.
04:52And of course, they get better.
04:54It's not always cancer or any other disease that kills people.
04:58Sometimes, it's the hunger that kills.
05:00So this can help them.
05:02That's what we need to look into, Maris. That's the second aspect.
05:07What we talked about is about the dietary.
05:10How much to eat and what kind of food to eat.
05:12But that's what the Department of Health is also learning.
05:16International analysts said that mukbang became popular because there's a feeling that you're eating alone.
05:23You're sitting in front of the TV, you're eating alone, but because there's a vlogger and the traditional mukbang is live.
05:30You can text. It's like you're eating together in front of the TV.
05:37You're hugging the viewer, so there's a feeling.
05:40Now the question, Maris, is maybe the food is not excessive, not high in salt, fat and sugar.
05:47It can actually be a Filipino version.
05:49Let's make it Pingang Pinoy.
05:51Let's talk to our countrymen.
05:53Maybe that's the way forward.
05:55All right. Thank you very much for the information you gave us.
05:58And for watching DOH's spokesperson, ASEC Albert Domingo.
06:02We will keep you posted if the mukbang vlogs will reach the ban.
06:07Thank you.
06:09Okay, Maris. Thank you very much and good morning.
06:11Good morning.
