00:00 Hangman in Top Gun has to be sort of a, you know, he can't be a likable figure.
00:04 He has to be the cockiest of the bunch.
00:06 He's the only guy that doesn't question his own abilities.
00:08 And Tom said, "Hey, you gotta own it. You gotta enjoy being a dick.
00:11 Embrace the dishbaggery."
00:13 Hey, I'm Glenn Powell.
00:15 Esquire's asked me to explain some things.
00:17 So let's dive in.
00:24 Top Gun 2 star was almost concussed by Tom Hardy in Dark Knight Bane stunt.
00:30 I shot a small role in the Dark Knight Rises.
00:34 I play stockbroker number two.
00:37 We rehearsed the stunt a couple times where basically Tom Hardy's supposed to give me a little tap on the back of the head
00:43 before he slams so I can kind of put my arms down.
00:46 Tom's a strong man.
00:47 Also, we got caught up in the moment.
00:49 He just slammed my head into the keyboard.
00:52 I kind of awoke from a daze and Chris Nolan came up to me and said, "Man, that was perfect."
00:57 I said, "Yeah, I think I hit my head pretty hard on that keyboard."
01:00 And Chris goes, "Can you do it again just like that?"
01:02 And I said, "Yeah, yeah. We got whatever you need."
01:04 And he goes, "I'm kidding. Go to see the medic. We'll see you on the other side."
01:07 So you do whatever you can for your art.
01:09 And Christopher Nolan has a great sense of humor.
01:10 Top Gun 2 star got a real pilot's license for Maverick movie role.
01:15 We trained in all sorts of airplanes.
01:18 We trained in the Cessna, the X-300, the L-39, and then the F-18.
01:22 Through that process, you're also watching Tom Cruise show up to set in his own P-51 airplane.
01:28 And he's also flying on and off with a helicopter.
01:30 He just makes aviation look so cool.
01:32 So, of course, you catch the aviation bug.
01:34 So after wrapping Top Gun Maverick, I decided to become a full-blown pilot.
01:39 And Tom treated me to some flight lessons.
01:42 And so I got my pilot's license and now I'm a full-blown pilot flying myself around.
01:48 Not everywhere.
01:49 Tom Cruise told Glenn Powell to embrace douchebaggery in Top Gun Maverick.
01:54 What do you think Tom meant by this?
01:56 I think Tom was talking about the character.
01:58 I don't think he was talking about me to embrace my douchebaggery.
02:02 Hangman in Top Gun has to be sort of a...
02:05 You know, he can't be a likable figure. He has to be the cockiest of the bunch.
02:08 He's the only guy that doesn't question his own abilities.
02:10 And Tom said, "Hey, you gotta own it. You gotta enjoy being a dick."
02:13 Embrace the douchebaggery.
02:15 I'm not talking to you guys. I'm talking about me in this role.
02:18 Be a nice person. It's way cooler.
02:20 Do you remember your audition for your very first role in Spy Kids 3D Game Over?
02:26 The classic Oscar-nominated film, Spy Kids 3D Game Over.
02:31 I actually auditioned for two characters named E-Dog and Logos.
02:34 I remember being in an audition room as the last three of us for two roles.
02:38 And it's like me and then these two grown men with goatees.
02:42 And I was like, "What am I doing here?"
02:44 And then Robert Rodriguez ended up getting me the role of Long-Fingered Boy,
02:49 which really changed my life and really started a love of film.
02:52 So, you're never out of the fight.
02:54 You don't know when wins are gonna happen.
02:56 Expendables 3 star Glenn Powell reveals the cast members he can and can't take down in a match.
03:02 I would never challenge any of the Expendables cast members to a fight.
03:06 Unless they were sleeping.
03:07 Yeah, that's not a fight I'm willing to take.
03:09 Have you ever gotten to work out with any of your co-stars?
03:12 Yes, I have gotten to work out with pretty much all the Expendables cast members.
03:17 They all take their gym workout very seriously.
03:19 And they all have, you know, it's like taking a time machine.
03:23 You get to work out in the 80s with all those guys.
03:25 I really want to go to Gold's gym with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
03:29 So, if you're watching this, Arnie, I'm your guy.
03:32 Saddle up.
03:33 If he works out really early, me too.
03:36 What kind of genre would you like to do together next?
03:39 That's a good question.
03:41 Honestly, the rom-com genre is really fun.
03:43 I think we just have to beat it, figure out what makes it fun and different.
03:46 But there's no better way to go to work than to work on a rom-com.
03:50 How Glenn Powell nearly exposed himself to John Stamos on Scream Queens set.
03:55 Please explain.
03:56 So, John Stamos and I were not that close yet.
03:59 Now he's like one of my best friends.
04:01 The reason John and I became so close is our first scene in Scream Queens is a shower scene
04:06 where he's now dating my ex-girlfriend and I basically come to confront him about it in the showers.
04:11 So, he kept knocking on my trailer door before we were going to shoot the scene.
04:14 And he's like, "What are you wearing? Which sock are you wearing?
04:17 Are you wearing this thing or this thing?"
04:18 And so, he knocked on my door, and this must have been the fifth time he knocked on my door asking a question.
04:23 And I had not put on my sock yet, but I was about to open the door just to make him eye level with opening the trailer door.
04:34 And he was on Instagram Live.
04:37 So, that would have been a rude...
04:38 That would have been a hell of a door open.
04:42 Glad I didn't do that, but...
04:44 Hell.
04:46 Could have been great. I don't know.
04:48 Everybody Wants Some was a really special movie for me because when I got that movie,
04:53 that was really my first big break.
04:55 Not only to be one of the leads on a movie, but also to work with an iconic filmmaker, Richard Linklater.
05:02 And to do it as the spiritual sequel to Days of Confused, which is one of my all-time favorite movies.
05:07 That set was incredible because every guy on that movie is still best friends to this day.
05:13 We built this movie together, and we felt like a real baseball team in 1980, and it was really special.
05:19 So, when that movie ended, it really felt like the end of an era.
05:22 It felt like the end of the greatest party I'd ever been to.
05:25 So, and thank goodness, you know, you continue to work, but that movie will go down as maybe my most special film experience.
05:33 Twisters. Would you ever go storm chasing in real life?
05:37 Absolutely.
05:38 The crazy part about chasing storms, when you are trying to chase down a tornado, they don't appear on a schedule.
05:45 If you have any sort of things to do during that day, you gotta cancel those plans.
05:50 And so while we were shooting, we were not able to actually go chase tornadoes, but we did have an actual tornado descend on our set, and everybody had to leave.
05:59 So, we didn't chase tornadoes. Tornadoes chased us.
06:02 What was the writing process like for Hitman? Were you nervous to write with Linklater?
06:07 He's honestly been a guy that I've been looking up to forever, and we really found a great creative rhythm on Everybody Wants Something.
06:15 And so after making that movie, I really didn't have any reservations about writing with Rick, and one of the coolest parts about being in Hollywood is like people that you idolize working with, you end up working with them, and then, you know, heroes become colleagues.
06:28 So, I feel like that was a very easy process.
06:31 All of your alter egos believe "all pie is good pie." Do you agree with that sentiment?
06:36 "All pie is good pie" is actually a real phrase that the real guy, Gary Johnson, would say when he would sit down with people who thought he was a real Hitman.
06:44 As his confirmation phrase, he would say, "You're gonna ask me, 'How's your pie?' And I will say, 'All pie is good pie.' And that's how you know I'm the Hitman you're looking for."
06:54 Do I agree that all pie is good pie? Absolutely not. There are some really disgusting pies out there. Do not try everything, because some people are reckless with their pie making.
07:02 What's the secret to playing multiple personas in one film?
07:07 The benefit that I had in Hitman is that a lot of these are actually based on real characters that Gary Johnson would play.
07:14 I got to go through all these police debriefs and listen to recordings of the real Gary Johnson sitting down with people who thought he was a real Hitman.
07:22 So a lot of these are based on those characters and then the rest of it. Since real retail Hitmen do not exist, people think they exist.
07:31 So they really are pulling from pop culture and movies and books and television shows and all these things.
07:37 So you'll see when you watch this movie where I pulled those things from. See if you can figure it out.
07:43 Which of your characters would you most like to have a meal with and why?
07:47 Gary Johnson. The character I play in Hitman, I really wish I could have met the real Gary Johnson.
07:52 Richard Linklater got a chance to meet Gary and hang with him. Apparently he was a really cool dude.
07:57 I feel like he would have been proud of this movie. So send this one up to Gary Johnson.
08:02 Alright, I'm Glenn Powell. Thanks for watching.
08:05 (upbeat music)
08:07 (door slams)
