00:00Hey, Bobby Manning here.
00:18Welcome to the Yarn Report after hours.
00:22We need it tonight.
00:23There's a lot to talk about after this loss.
00:26118-94 to the Cavs, game two, series now tied at 1-1 apiece, and it was a bad one.
00:35The Celtics benched their starters with five minutes left, give up a 24-9 run to start
00:39the fourth, the third quarter, not much better.
00:43Celtics fall to 11% from three in the second half, can't make up any ground in that final
00:48frame after going into halftime tied.
00:51And it's that series of runs, Noah Dalzell here, Josue Pavon, going into halftime, Cavs
00:56went on a run, going into the third quarter, they built that advantage, and then they extended
01:01into the start of the fourth.
01:03This just ends up being a disaster.
01:04The transition defense, bad early.
01:07Half court defense sometimes, especially when the Cavs got to pick and rolls.
01:11Kevin Mobley, the drop-off passes to him, Cavs wanted to go there early and often.
01:15Shoot 10 for 13 in that opening quarter, and then you go into the second half and it's
01:20just Jason Tatum falling to 40% from the field again, Derek White, others not able
01:26to pick him up this time, and the offense just completely stalled.
01:31So this is bad all around.
01:32The focus is going to be Tatum, and we'll get into him again here, but everybody played
01:37poorly tonight.
01:38Horford gave them some shooting, Pritchard gave a little energy off the bench, but overall
01:42Celtics didn't show up tonight.
01:44They didn't.
01:45No, they didn't.
01:46Of course, the shots didn't fall, which didn't help, but that's when you're supposed to make
01:48your adjustments, right, Bobby?
01:49You know, I just think the Celtics didn't do that, and especially when it came to...
01:53They tried with Hellman and some of that other stuff, but it didn't work.
01:55Yeah, but for the most part, I just think the third quarter is when things really changed,
01:58and I think everyone in this building knew that Donovan Mitchell wasn't going to have,
02:02you know, what was it, a seven-point performance, right?
02:06We all knew going into that second half he was going to flip a switch.
02:09He does this.
02:10This is exactly the reason why they're in this position to begin with, because of that
02:13game seven, you know, I'm going to go into my takeover mode, but I think what he did
02:17that especially affected what the Celtics were trying to do in terms of combating that
02:21was getting everyone else involved and seeking high-percentage shots to do it.
02:24You know, this isn't like the Miami loss in game one, right, or game two, rather, right?
02:28This is different because it wasn't like, oh, they just can't stop making three-pointers.
02:31No, these guys were executing offensively, going to their big, seeking high-percentage
02:36shots.
02:37You know, it was relatively close until the second half where everything just jumped open
02:40because of one, Donovan Mitchell going off the way he did, and especially in that third
02:45quarter, or at least at the Caps as a whole, just knocking down seven three-pointers in
02:48that third quarter, but then also continue to pour it on in the fourth.
02:51And I don't blame Joe Mazzullo for pulling his starters, what was it, the five-minute
02:54mark of that fourth quarter, because did any one of us feel like there was a comeback there?
02:59No, it wasn't there.
03:00They got the flag and foul, and that was it.
03:02Right.
03:03But I mean, he was asked about it, and I was kind of like, I wasn't surprised he did that
03:06because I didn't think they deserved to be out there.
03:09You know, the game was done, on to game three.
03:12You only have a day in between moving forward.
03:13So all that stuff, it matters at this point in this second round series, where compared
03:19to the first round, you had a couple more days to prepare.
03:22Mitchell scored 16 of Cleveland's 36 in that third quarter, hit a buzzer beater three to
03:26cap it off.
03:29Josue mentioned it.
03:30They went to the rim tonight.
03:31I thought it was interesting this morning, a shoot around, a lot of buzz, Cavs shot 80%
03:36at the rim in that game one, and they went right back there to start this one.
03:40Josue was amazing tonight, and I've been very critical of him.
03:44They looked for him.
03:45They got him in a rhythm, and he devastated the Celtics inside.
03:48Got a hook shot off early, a couple of dunks, and then he hit a three, and you're like,
03:52all right, here we go.
03:53He passed well, and of course he defended well, and you saw, again, the Cavs here.
03:57They just took guys off Warford.
03:59They took guys off some of the perimeter players for the Celtics on offense, and that's what
04:03leads to Tatum really struggling in this game.
04:05Again, they get a shot off.
04:07Yeah, I think one of the ... It didn't come up post-game, but I actually thought they
04:11really missed Porzingis tonight, and it's not an excuse.
04:14I mean, they've been playing shorthanded teams.
04:17Cleveland's without Jared Allen, who's probably relatively even more important to that team
04:20than Porzingis is, but defensively, I think the players that we've grown to rely on didn't
04:26have it.
04:27I don't think Al Warford or Luke Cornett protected the rim the way that Porzingis would have.
04:32You could feel his absence.
04:33It was noticeably missing, and Tillman gave them some good minutes.
04:36I was actually surprised that they didn't go with him a little bit longer.
04:39The offense, he couldn't be a threat out there, and that's what leads to the Cavs shying away
04:45from other guys.
04:46They can easily do that, and there's just so much attention on Tatum right now, and
04:51that's a huge issue.
04:52I don't know, though, on that note, just because I don't know that Luke Cornett was much more
04:55of an offensive threat tonight, and when they went back with him in the second half, I thought
04:59this wasn't Luke's night tonight.
05:00Game one was.
05:01Game five was.
05:03He's had plenty of good moments in this postseason.
05:05He just didn't have it tonight defensively in the same way, and I thought that.
05:08I was surprised they didn't go with Tillman further.
05:10It's not a critical point here, but yeah, overall, I thought that the Celtics just were
05:14flat from the jump, but also that Cleveland played a really good basketball game, and
05:19I don't.
05:20I know that I always have the positive spin on things, but I think that it is important
05:22to note that we are in the second round of the playoffs.
05:25There's eight teams left, and Cleveland, you know, maybe he's not the most salient opponent
05:29here, and maybe they squeeze by a magic team that, you know, it was not the hardest first
05:33quarter matchup, but they played a really good basketball game today, both defensively
05:36and offensively, and so these things happen.
05:38I don't love how the Celtics responded to it.
05:40I think the Celtics could have maintained their composure a lot better and not gotten
05:43blown out, but I also thought Cleveland played a nearly flawless game, honestly, so that's
05:48a big part of it.
05:49It brings up bad memories, the home losses, big part of last year's struggles, the defensive
05:53lapses into the playoffs, and certainly those weird second halves where they just seemed
05:59to get taken out of the game.
06:00You saw that weird body language, the lack of energy and fight in the fourth quarter.
06:07It's concerning, and they're probably going to bounce back in this series.
06:11They're probably going to win this series, but the continued trend right now, and we
06:14talked about it a lot after game one, and I think tonight it became a lot more salient,
06:19the struggles of Jason Tatum.
06:21He can't get to his spots right now.
06:23Going to the rim, he found some success, 10 free throws in the first half, but then just
06:28won in the second half very shortly after halftime, and he was trying to shoot himself
06:32out of those struggles in this game and just couldn't do it, and he didn't have the support
06:37of Jalen Brown this time.
06:38He supported Derek White this time, and they needed the scoring, finishing with just 94
06:42points.
06:43They need him to get going, and he just couldn't, so I asked him after, like, anything physical
06:48here?
06:49He didn't answer that.
06:50He said no.
06:51He said no?
06:52Yeah, he said no.
06:53All right, so nothing there.
06:54I think that's a concern we've had, maybe the ankle lingering.
06:57I don't know what to say at this point.
06:59There's obviously an enormous amount of pressure on him from the defense right now, but they
07:04need him.
07:05They need him to be better.
07:06Your best player has to be better in this series.
07:08Yeah, I mean, no question.
07:09I think this is when it begins to become a problem, right?
07:13I couldn't get over the whole game one, yeah, that's great, the Celtics blew them out, they're
07:19coasting right now, or at least it seems like it, those three wins in a row, but what's
07:22up with Jason Tatum?
07:23Because I was just saying, look, this hasn't translated into a loss.
07:27Now it has, and am I worried?
07:29Not quite, but yes, he has to respond in a big way, and hopefully we see that in Cleveland.
07:33I don't know if it matters much to him or if he even remembers.
07:36I'd love to ask him about it once we get there, but it's where he started his career.
07:39His very first NBA game was in Cleveland.
07:42I think a lot of what the narrative is in the sense of, oh, if you're a great player,
07:48you have to be putting up 35 points in the playoffs, or, oh, if your team was the best
07:52team in the NBA for most of the regular season, you shouldn't be losing to the Cavaliers by
07:5625 points.
07:57I get why he's frustrated in the sense of, okay, well, look at the accolades, and look
08:02at who Coach of the Year is, and who the MVP is, or where he fell down outside the top
08:08five.
08:09I don't take that quote as in he's salty about it.
08:12I look at it as like, well, why are they held to such a high standard, and that they cannot
08:18lose by 20 points in the playoffs?
08:19Why is that so unthinkable for that to happen?
08:22And then, of course, yeah, Tatum shooting and his percentages, that doesn't help, but
08:27that was going on beforehand, and the Celtics were still winning these games.
08:30So yeah, now there's a concern, you wait for them to bounce back, but I just hate this
08:34characteristic of the Celtics, where it's like they have to get handed one of the worst
08:41losses that we've seen in a while for them to respond in a big way, which I think will
08:44definitely happen in Cleveland.
08:45Well, let's hear that quote from Tatum here after the game.
08:49I mean, that's the narrative that you might see on TV, the idea that we have a super team.
09:01It's two-fold, right?
09:02We didn't have a Coach of the Year, we didn't have an MVP, we only had two All-Stars.
09:08So they say we're a super team, but we didn't get rewarded like we are.
09:17We know we got a good team, we're not perfect, we play the right way, more often than not,
09:23and we know we got to be better.
09:25But I guess saying people that are spoiled from our success, we don't pay attention to
09:34those things, we just go out there and control what we can't control.
09:40So we've heard it before, the expectation that they're supposed to win every game, win
09:44by a lot.
09:45He's mentioned that.
09:46I think that stems from Joe's mindset that you don't have expectations about how it's
09:51going to go.
09:52Like, you're going to face adversity, you're going to face hard teams, and look at past
09:57playoff teams to say, like, other teams won championships and had bad losses, like these
10:01bad moments.
10:02It's going to even the 08 Celtics in that regard.
10:06So I get that part of it.
10:09To go to awards, though.
10:10Yeah, you hate that he said those awards, and that's the part that everyone's going
10:14to be fixated on all morning in Boston.
10:16Like, why?
10:17No one's going to ask about it.
10:18So stay tuned, because that's going to be the talk of the town.
10:19Can I defend him, though?
10:20Because, OK, here's the thing with Jason Kanem.
10:21Yeah, we can tell you won't defend him, though.
10:22Go ahead.
10:23OK.
10:24But here's the thing, though.
10:25OK?
10:26He sits through these press conferences after almost every single game.
10:29And he's been shooting poorly for a while now, and every single game he has to answer
10:32these questions around his shooting struggles and around whenever they lose, it's like a
10:36frenzy, right?
10:37That's a media frenzy in Boston.
10:38Everybody's shredding him.
10:39Everybody in the national TV is shredding him as well.
10:42That's a thing.
10:43But ultimately, I understand the player frustration from they've had five blowout wins now in
10:48the playoffs.
10:49When they blowout teams, we're all bored, and then we're talking about his shooting
10:52struggles.
10:53And then whenever they lose, it's like the end of the world, right?
10:56So it was a bad loss.
10:57It was as bad as it gets.
10:58They lost by 28 to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
11:00It shouldn't have happened.
11:01But I think he had a moment of frustration.
11:04He's being asked about getting their ass whooped, all these different things that he's supposed
11:08to keep his composure and just give another answer about, we're just going to stay ahead,
11:12stay the course, these token answers we don't want.
11:15He actually said something that was quotable, and now he's getting roasted for it.
11:19He shouldn't have brought up awards.
11:20But I also think that he makes a good point in the sense that this team's expectations
11:25have been through the roof from the get-go to the point where anything outside of a championship
11:28is viewed as a choke for this roster.
11:31I get it.
11:32I don't think it's a championship, though.
11:34I mean, yeah, you're right in that sense that if they don't win at all, people are going
11:37to say, oh, well, this is what we should have seen coming the whole time.
11:40However, I think what it really boils down to, though, is people just want to see Tatum
11:46just going off every single night in the playoffs, and that's not always the formula for winning.
11:52And that's not the way this team is built, though.
11:54I actually think that we've seen games where Brown or Tatum go over 40.
11:58Like in Charlotte earlier in the year, Tatum had a huge game.
12:01They lost that game.
12:02Yeah.
12:03Jalen Brown explodes against Denver, and they lose that game.
12:05I think their best games are not those performances.
12:08Game one was great.
12:09Game one was a great offensive blueprint, and the media cycle was about Tatum's struggles.
12:13And so that's the guy that you're seeing there giving that quote.
12:16Like, he's frustrated.
12:17I understand it from a human lens.
12:19I just think that we got to cut him some slack, too, if he says something that's a little
12:22bit off of the perfect response that he's supposed to give.
12:27Because I don't think-
12:28Here's my frustration with it.
12:29I just feel like, though, the people who question Tatum in a sense of like, does he care about
12:33personal accolades and that stuff?
12:35This is that fuel.
12:36The MVP voting.
12:37This is that fuel that they need, you know, to say like, aha, see, he does really care
12:41about that stuff.
12:42The MVP voting came out yesterday, and what do you find, a six?
12:45Six.
12:46He's at the top five.
12:47Yeah.
12:48Yeah, six.
12:49I don't think he's crazy about that, but I also don't think that he's losing sleep over
12:52it.
12:53I just think it's a matter of, okay-
12:54But it came out in the answer.
12:55No one asked him about awards.
12:57Right.
12:58But I think what he's trying to say is a lot of what Noah's saying is just like, it's almost
13:01like, okay, well, this is the way it looks.
13:03You know, I may not be shooting my best, but we're winning, and that's what really matters.
13:08Whereas the New York Knicks can have, what, almost a 500 record in the playoffs, and everyone's
13:13like, oh, look out for the Knicks.
13:14They're amazing.
13:15The Boston Celtics still have well beyond a winning record in the playoffs, you know,
13:20by the longest margin out of any other team in the NBA, and it's still not enough just
13:25because, oh, well, Tatum's got to be shooting 45%.
13:28He's got to be making 38% of his threes, and he's got to average like 34 points a night.
13:32It doesn't always translate that way, especially with this team, when you have other weapons
13:35and you have that depth.
13:37No other team has that depth, so I think it's really, it's kind of, it's tricky to pinpoint
13:42Tatum's shooting and say, oh, man, he's got to turn this around because the Celtics could
13:46be in trouble.
13:47Maybe, but I'm not ready to hit the panic button yet.
13:50He needs to play better.
13:51I think that's all there is to it.
13:52He does need to play better.
13:53That's right, but I don't think it's a matter of like, man, you know, he's the reason why
13:58the Celtics, you know, this series is tied 1-1.
14:01The expectations are high, and so when you go against a team that you're a 12-point favorite
14:05against at home, they just blew out by 25.
14:08They lost.
14:09It's not that they should never lose.
14:10It's not that they didn't win by 25.
14:13They came out here and got blown off the floor.
14:17But the team did.
14:18I don't think it's a matter of Tatum went out there.
14:19Right, and that's a good point.
14:20The whole team played that night.
14:21Like we were saying a couple of nights ago, like it wasn't like a February 22nd type of
14:26thing.
14:27You remember when Tatum used to go like two for 22 or whatever, or like when he felt like
14:30he had to shoot, he felt like he had to go out there and put the team on his back.
14:34He knows that he has help, and that's just not smart basketball to put all that pressure
14:39on yourself.
14:40Yeah, I just don't get why we have to fixate on him in particular, and I know that he's
14:42the superstar.
14:43Because he's the leader.
14:44I mean, I mean, he's definitely the leader.
14:45No, no, no, no.
14:46Your best player.
14:47To me, it's that, and also because Brunson's having that big night, or Halliburton, all
14:52these stars across the league, but they don't have the same team that Tatum has.
14:56This team is built different, though.
14:57Yeah.
14:58I agree.
14:59It's him, you know, taking 30 shots, whether or not he has it, he has to get it going.
15:03Like every single player shot poorly today, Prayden Pritchard was the only one that shot
15:07above 50% from the field.
15:08So like Jalen Brown had a bad shooting night, Derek White missed the rim on multiple attempts.
15:13Like that was wild to see.
15:14He took some bad shots, too.
15:15Yeah, he took some bad shots.
15:16He took heat check shots that like were very strange to see.
15:18And defensively, they put him on an island.
15:20He did just score 25 points in three straight games, though.
15:21Yeah, no, I have no problem with the shots that he took, but I'm just saying that like
15:24they lose as a team, but then when they win, it's they win the shot, but then he didn't
15:28play well still.
15:29That's my frustration with the narrative around it.
15:31And again, it doesn't matter because the narrative is the narrative and what's going to matter
15:34is how they perform in game three.
15:36But I do think that every time they lose, we have I mean, we had the same competition
15:39after game two versus Miami.
15:40They came out and blew them out three times.
15:42So this one was a little different to me because they just got outwilled tonight.
15:45It wasn't an extraordinary shooting night by Cleveland that you had the 23-3, 23-3s
15:50in that game.
15:51I think they got a little outwilled in game two versus Miami, too.
15:54Those closeouts were a lot of rewatch where there were shots.
15:57And that's what's concerned me now, too, a little bit as the defense is starting to lapse.
16:02Joe Mizzou admitted that tonight as well.
16:03He admitted that that came from missing shots.
16:06And so this, however you want to put it, was a mentality loss, an effort loss at times.
16:13And being able to stay in the game, a game like this is important.
16:18I think defense, as I said on the postgame show, is how you do that.
16:22They need to become a more solid defensive team.
16:25They need to increase the aggressiveness of their scheming right now because right now
16:30they're just sitting back watching guys pull up for shots.
16:34How many times did Darius Garland and Mitchell just step into wide open threes in this game?
16:38And I know they don't want to go to the mid-range, which is why they're kind of sitting back
16:43and allowing some of that.
16:44But you got to get more into that switch.
16:46I know you mentioned Tillman.
16:47Good try and an adjustment.
16:48Good try and an adjustment.
16:50I will say also on the Garland threes, I think one of the things that are a little underrated
16:54is when they're giving them those open threes, now you're getting Darius Garland, Donovan
16:59Mitchell hitting the really tough ones.
17:01Because a lot of times they've pointed to, well, they started hitting tough shots.
17:04It's always the tough shots after they got seven wide open shots and got in rhythm.
17:07And I'm sure when they watch film, they'll all be saying that too.
17:11Yeah, I mean, there was a couple of plays where I felt like Derek just didn't even close
17:14out on Darius in that third quarter.
17:16It was like two threes.
17:17And I'm sitting there like, where did this come from?
17:20Where did this attitude come from?
17:21There were pick and roll coverage lapses.
17:23The transition defense was horrendous.
17:25One of them was a foul because he tried to get over to the screen.
17:27And of course, I think he fouled Mitchell.
17:28He was in line for three.
17:29But before that, there was zero to no resistance.
17:33I mean, close to no resistance on Darius Garland.
17:36And he can get going, man.
17:37I know he's been a streaky, especially in these playoffs.
17:39He hasn't been his best, but he can start cooking and soaking a little bird.
17:43That's exactly what happened.
17:44Cavs are 4-0 at home.
17:46What are you expecting these games in Cleveland to look like?
17:50I mean, I think the Celtics are going to win both, honestly.
17:53I had Celtics in five.
17:54I'm not shocked at the games you lost.
17:56Won't be shocked if they split them either.
17:58They're 4-0 at home, but they were all versus Orlando,
18:00which was a very inexperienced team that had never played a playoff game.
18:03It's definitely not a road playoff game.
18:04Sorry, Orlando.
18:05I don't think the Celtics are going to come into Cleveland afraid of that
18:08environment or afraid of the position that they're in.
18:11But they're going to need to have a completely different level of intensity.
18:15I think Jalen Brown said last series is last series.
18:18He doesn't want to talk about it.
18:19But there are a lot of parallels here between playing a team in game one
18:22that was coming off a very little rest when they were very well rested,
18:25blowing them out, coming out game two talking about how they're going to play
18:28a lot better than their opponent, and then not really showing up to it.
18:30So I guess in my mind, I see a parallel in how they might respond here.
18:34But Cleveland has a lot more talent and a lot more firepower than Miami did too.
18:37So they might not relent as easy.
18:39That's a big difference.
18:40They've got Mowgli.
18:42Allen, we'll see.
18:43Does he come back?
18:44But in the meantime, you do have a little bit more talent on this Cleveland side
18:48than the Heat had left at that point.
18:49Plus, no Port Zingas.
18:51Yeah, yeah, definitely.
18:52But I just think when the Celtics get their asses handed to them the way they did,
18:55they respond in a big way.
18:57So game three, I'd be shocked if they lose game three.
19:00Game four, I think, is the one where they're going to have to really fight
19:03because these guys, that's what they do, especially Donovan Mitchell.
19:06He doesn't give up.
19:07There's no way the Cats even make it this far without him.
19:10Obviously, when you look at what happened in game seven,
19:13which is overall, that's just his mindset, especially in the second half,
19:17especially when he feels like his back's against the wall.
19:19The Celtics have to match that intensity, but it's got to be one through five.
19:23It can't just be, if we limit Mitchell, then it's going to be a win.
19:28You have to send a message, and that starts from the very first quarter.
19:31And the Celtics did get out to that quick start, similar to what we saw in game one.
19:34And just like we saw in game one,
19:35the Cats responded right back before the end of the first quarter.
19:38But this one was different.
19:39They got other guys involved, Mobley, Okuro.
19:43I just feel like a lot of these starters really had their confidence on a different
19:47level compared to what happened in game one because they got their ass handed to them as well.
19:52So I just think these guys, yes, they're shorthanded.
19:55Yes, at times, they're going to really struggle to manufacture points.
19:58What they did tonight was really surprising, if you ask me, nearly hitting 120.
20:01But the Celtics have to be better defensively.
20:04There's no excuse for letting that type of stuff happen.
20:06I know the transition defense struggles a lot,
20:08especially against a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers.
20:10That's one of the Celtics' weaknesses going into the series.
20:15It's just been a weakness of theirs throughout the course of the regular season.
20:19And playing against a guy like Mitchell, he'll make you pay.
20:22But you can't let the other guys get involved as well,
20:24especially three or four of those starting members,
20:28because the Celtics' bench comes up thin.
20:30Outside of what we saw from Peyton Pritchard, I felt like Hauser was a ghost.
20:33You know, without Holford in that starting five,
20:36I mean, it's important, you know, it's not really, really important.
20:41It's not like, oh, the best second unit is going to win the game for you.
20:45But I think it matters a little more when you don't have Porzingis out there for the Celtics.
20:49We're brought to you by PrizePix.

20:56Pritchard, we had Pritchard Moore.
20:57Double-figured Pritchard, man.
20:58They had him at eight.
20:59That was rude, if you ask me.
21:01The slump is over. Pritchard's back.
21:03We had White less.
21:04We knew White was going to come back to Earth a little bit.
21:06And they had him 18 in this one.
21:07So more good picks for Joe Sway and I.
