MLS UPDATE: FC Dallas Advances to Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 with 1-0 Win Over Memphis 901 FC

FC Dallas is through to the Round of 16 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating Memphis 901 FC 1-0.

In the 73rd minute, a free kick taken by forward Jesús Ferreira found forward Logan Farrington, who settled it in the box before he “smashed it,” as he says, being his first goal of the year.

Farrington is now the only currently rostered FCD player to have scored in the U.S. Open Cup.

Memphis, who only had 6 shots compared to FCD’s 16, is a member of the United Soccer League, the second tier of the U.S. soccer pyramid.

These two teams have the ability to meet one another in the Open Cup because any team affiliated with U.S. Soccer, whether professional or amateur, may compete in it.

The Open Cup is the oldest, ongoing national soccer tournament in the United States. First played in 1914, it’s now in its 109th edition.

This year, FC Dallas is one of just eight Major League Soccer teams to be in the tournament, and is one of the most successful MLS teams in its history.

FCD had won the tournament twice, once back in 1997 and more recently in 2016, and finished as runners-up in 2005 and 2007.

Before losing in the opening round match last season, Dallas had won eight-straight dating back to 2013.

And now, a new streak begins.

In just a few days time, FC Dallas will be back in Toyota Stadium for another Copa Tejas matchup with Austin FC, who FCD lost 2-1 to at Q2 Stadium back in March. Kickoff is at 7:30.
