Columbia University President Says Talks with Protesters Fail to Reach Divestment Agreement

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik said talks with student organizers of encampment protests have failed to reach an agreement. The university will not divest investments from Israel, a key demand of protesters at Columbia and other campuses. Columbia did offer to expedite a review process of new divestment proposals and publish its direct investment holdings. It also offered investments in health and education programs in Gaza as negotiations resulted in a stalemate. The protests at Columbia are in their second week and risk disrupting its May 15 commencement ceremonies.
